Discover glacier peaks and cowboy creeks on this Yellowstone road trip

You’ll start out in South Dakota, spotting bison in Custer National Park and marvelling at the world-famous landmark of Mount Rushmore, the vast sculpture of four US presidents carved from a mountainside. You’ll stay in the history-drenched State Game Lodge at Custer State Park Resort, built in local stone and wood in 1920 and with an illustrious past behind it, including serving as the ‘Summer White House’ for President Calvin Coolidge in 1927.

Then you’ll drive to Wyoming, where the Old West charm of the ‘emerald city’ of Sheridan is backdropped by the peaks of the Bighorn Mountains. Your base here is the Sheridan Inn, B Signature Collection, with its atmospheric rooms named after the likes of Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley. From there you’ll continue to Cody, home to the unmissable Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway, named after its cowboy founder. The centrally located Cody will be your comfy base here, with an indoor pool, hot tub, and roaring fires.

After six days, you’ll reach Yellowstone, which became the world’s first national park in 1872 and features more geysers, hot springs, and geothermal features than anywhere else in the world, including Old Faithful Geyser and Mammoth Hot Springs. Here you’ll spend two nights staying within the National Park itself, in the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins, a newer lodge built in the classic style of log columns and cedar, with tempting dining options, including the Geyser Grill. You’ll also spend two nights in West Yellowstone, staying at the Three Bear Lodge, which has been open since 1932 and offers Western-style breakfasts, a pool, and a hot tub.

There’s a change of pace with a night in Missoula, an energetic university town packed with culture, entertainment, and upmarket restaurants. You’ll finish your unforgettable road trip with two nights in Glacier National Park, with more than a dozen sparkling glaciers to be dazzled by, along with deep valleys to explore. A highlight is driving along the ‘Going to the Sun Road’, and you’ll stay in the delightful Pine Lodge on Whitefish River, which includes accommodation right on the lake, water sports, outdoor fire pits, and much more.
