Where to ski this December

My top 3 ski resorts for December skiing

The ski season in Europe generally starts early December, but if you are thinking about getting away this December, it’s best to take some time to consider which resort you choose to give you the best opportunity for great snow conditions.

I’ve been lucky enough to ski since I was in my teens (not that I’ve really got much better over the years!) However, having skied as an adult with friends, in a couple through the ages and over recent years with kids, I know what to priorities when choosing which resort would be best suited.

I’m focusing on good December resort options here, as many people look to go away over the festive seasons. It feels a tad early to mention the festive season but when it comes to skiing, it’s great to book early!

Morzine, France

A great choice for all, but if you are a family this really is a great option with relatively short transfer times, firework displays and Santa visits and carol singing in December. Morzine village sits lower in altitude, but you will have access to the Portes du Soleil area, which includes the high altitude resort of Avoriaz.

Hotel Neve, has some great family rooms and is located just 400m from a cable car. It also has an indoor swimming pool and fantastic breakfast.

Zermatt, Switzerland

This resort has a very reliable snowfall, making it a popular choice in December. Zermatt offers some amazing views and lots of high altitude slopes. The resort is also a good choice for all skiing levels so it can cater well for groups of families and friends. It’s a car free resort too, making it safe for children.

Mountain Exposure offer some brilliant apartments, some even come with 5 bedrooms and a sauna, making them a great options for groups of friends, families or bringing the grandparents along! Located close to a Gondola and a number of chair lifts puts it in a convenient location. The apartments are well equipped, so you can either stay and enjoy cooking for yourself or go into the resort.

St Anton, Austria

St Anton, which is located in Austria’s Tyrol region, is an incredibly popular choice among skiers and snowboarders. It has fantastic reputation for its reliable snowfall and lively atmosphere, yet still family friendly. The resort offers access to over 300Km of slopes which suite all levels and it also has some great snow parks. It has a real Christmas appeal due to it’s charming markets, great après ski scene and friendly atmosphere.

Hotel Zur Pfeffermuhle offers a great balance of modern and alpine decor. They offer a half board option, with spacious well equipped apartments, which is great if you have children and also want to take some lunch out for the day.
