Antigua

With 365 beaches and only an 8 hour flight away, Antigua is the place to kick off your shoes and chill out.

I stayed at grand Pineapple Beach for 1 week in a tropical waterfront room – wonderful to wake up to views of the beach and ocean. This is a small resort, with very friendly staff, a wonderful speciality restaurant and the unique ‘Outhouse’ for panoramic views and midday snacks.

The second week was spent at the Verandah (right next door!) but it was a totally different. Very large, spread out over many acres – you can call for a buggy to get you around the resort, or get exercise by walking! Accommodation is in delightful semi-detached villas.

I spent a full day going round the island by catamaran which was interesting and exhilarating where the ocean meets the calmer sea! You can take a trip to Barbuda, pink sands for miles and also the habitat of frigate birds. Nelson’s Dockyard is definitely worth a visit for its maritime history, and Shirley Heights on a Sunday for a party atmosphere, the taste of local food and of course – music! It was my third visit to Antigua, and I hope it will not be my last.
