California in twelve days. A relaxed luxury route for first timers
California has a way of surprising people. You get dramatic coastlines, iconic cities, vineyards, desert landscapes and some of the best road trip scenery in the world. The trick is choosing a route that lets you enjoy all of that without feeling like you are spending half the holiday in the car. Here is a twelve day luxury route I often suggest to first timers.
Begin in San Francisco
San Francisco gives you a gentle start. Enjoy the waterfront, wander through different neighbourhoods with a private guide and take in the views from the hills. You can enjoy three nights here without rushing. I usually suggest a boutique hotel near the bay so you can explore on foot.
Drive into wine country
Napa or Sonoma is an easy drive and feels completely different from the city. Spend two or three nights at a vineyard hotel and enjoy tastings, relaxed dining and beautiful scenery. This part of the trip slows your pace nicely.
Follow the Pacific Coast Highway
This stretch is world famous for a reason. The coastline feels wild and the views are spectacular. I plan this so you can take it steadily, stopping at places like Carmel and Big Sur. You can enjoy cliffside walks, great food and stylish coastal hotels.
Spend days unwinding in Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara gives you sunshine, Spanish architecture and a very gentle feel. Two nights here feels perfect for most people. It is the kind of place where you wander, enjoy beautiful food and relax without trying.
Finish in Los Angeles
LA makes a great end point. Enjoy rooftop cocktails, a private tour of Hollywood or time by the beach in Santa Monica. Two or three nights works well before flying home. Choosing the right neighbourhood and hotel makes all the difference here.
Why this route works
It brings together cities, wine, coast and culture. It also keeps the driving comfortable and broken up with meaningful stops. The whole route can be fully protected as a package, and if anything changes while you are travelling, I can adjust your plans so you keep your flow.
