A Romantic City Break: Our Couples' Trip to Amsterdam

Vicki Thompson on 21 February 2025
Amsterdam has always been on our travel bucket list, and we finally got the chance to explore this vibrant and charming city together. From its picturesque canals to its buzzing nightlife and incredible culture, our couples’ trip was nothing short of magical. Here’s a little insight into our stay, the must-see attractions, and why Amsterdam is the perfect city break for couples.

Where We Stayed – Sir Adam Hotel

For this trip, we wanted somewhere stylish, modern, and in a fantastic location, so we chose to stay at Sir Adam Hotel. Situated in the iconic A’DAM Tower, this boutique hotel offers stunning city views, trendy interiors, and an unbeatable atmosphere. The moment we checked in, we were welcomed with a chic and contemporary space, complete with vinyl records, an in-room turntable, and floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing breathtaking views of Amsterdam.

The hotel’s laid-back yet luxurious vibe made it an ideal retreat after a long day of exploring. Plus, the location was perfect—just a short ferry ride across the IJ River to the heart of Amsterdam’s lively center.

Exploring Amsterdam – Top Things to Do

Amsterdam has something for every type of traveler, and we made sure to experience both its romantic charm and cultural highlights. Here are some of our favourite activities:

Canal Cruise at Sunset – Nothing beats sailing through the city's iconic canals while watching the sunset. The twinkling lights and historic bridges created the most magical atmosphere.

Anne Frank House – A deeply moving experience that we highly recommend. Walking through the preserved rooms was both emotional and enlightening.

Rijksmuseum & Van Gogh Museum – As art lovers, visiting these museums was an absolute must. The stunning pieces at the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh’s masterpieces left us in awe.

A'DAM Lookout & Swing – Right next to our hotel, this attraction gave us breathtaking panoramic views of Amsterdam. The highlight? The Over the Edge swing, where we swung high above the city!

Jordaan District – Wandering through the charming streets of Jordaan was an absolute dream. The boutique shops, cozy cafés, and peaceful canals made it a perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Food & Drinks – Amsterdam’s Culinary Scene

We were blown away by Amsterdam’s incredible food scene! Some of our favourite dining experiences included:

Breakfast at The Avocado Show – A must-visit for avocado lovers! Every dish was as delicious as it was Instagram-worthy.

Dinner at De Kas – A unique dining experience in a greenhouse, serving fresh farm-to-table cuisine.

Dutch Pancakes & Stroopwafels – We couldn’t resist indulging in these sweet treats at various street vendors.

Cocktails at Pulitzer’s Bar – A hidden gem with a cozy yet elegant atmosphere, perfect for a romantic evening.

Would We Return? Absolutely!

Amsterdam exceeded our expectations in every way. From its romantic canals and rich history to the incredible food and vibrant nightlife, it had everything we could have wanted from a couples’ getaway. Staying at the Sir Adam Hotel added that extra touch of luxury and uniqueness, making our trip even more memorable.

If you’re planning a romantic city break, Amsterdam should definitely be on your list. Whether you’re looking for culture, adventure, or simply a cozy escape, this city has it all.
