Our Family Holiday to Kefalonia: A Stay in Svoronata

Vicki Thompson on 07 February 2025
Kefalonia is one of Greece’s most breathtaking islands, and we were lucky enough to experience its beauty firsthand on our recent family holiday. Staying in Svoronata, a charming and peaceful village, provided the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. From stunning beaches to delicious Greek cuisine, here’s everything we loved about our trip and why we’d highly recommend it for families.

Choosing a Villa Over a Hotel – Why It Worked for Us

For this holiday, we opted to stay in a villa rather than a hotel, and it was the perfect choice for our family. Here’s why: ? More Space & Privacy – With young children, having our own space to spread out and relax made all the difference. ? Private Pool – The kids loved being able to swim whenever they wanted without worrying about busy hotel pools. ? Self-Catering Flexibility – We enjoyed having the option to cook our own meals, especially for relaxed family breakfasts and evening BBQs. ? Peace & Quiet – Villas offer a more tranquil setting compared to the hustle and bustle of a hotel resort, which allowed us to truly unwind.

Svoronata – A Tranquil Greek Escape ??

Nestled in the southwest of Kefalonia, Svoronata is a quiet and picturesque village surrounded by olive groves and rolling hills. It offered us the best of both worlds—peaceful surroundings while still being close to many of the island’s top attractions. The village itself is dotted with traditional Greek tavernas, local bakeries, and friendly locals who made us feel right at home.

Beautiful Beaches Nearby ???

One of the biggest highlights of Kefalonia is its incredible coastline. During our stay, we visited some of the most stunning beaches near Svoronata, including:

Ammes Beach – A sandy, family-friendly beach with shallow waters, perfect for the kids to splash around safely.

Avithos Beach – Known for its golden sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s a great spot for relaxing and swimming.

Ai Helis Beach – A quieter beach with soft sand and calm waters, ideal for sunbathing and taking in the scenic views.

Myrtos Beach – Although a bit further away, it was worth the trip for its dazzling blue waters and dramatic cliffs.

Delicious Greek Food & Tavernas

Greek food is always a highlight, and Svoronata did not disappoint! We dined at several authentic local tavernas, where we indulged in mouthwatering dishes such as: Fresh seafood – The grilled octopus and freshly caught fish were some of the best we’ve ever had. Traditional Greek Moussaka – Layers of eggplant, minced meat, and creamy béchamel—delicious! Souvlaki & Gyros – Perfect for a quick and tasty meal, the grilled meats wrapped in warm pita were a family favourite. Baklava & Loukoumades – These sweet treats were the perfect way to end our meals.

Things to Do in Kefalonia

Beyond its beautiful beaches, Kefalonia has so much to offer. Some of our favourite activities included:

Exploring Melissani Cave – A magical underground lake with stunning blue waters, best experienced on a boat tour.

Visiting Assos Village – A charming harbour village with colourful houses and a Venetian castle.

Argostoli & The Turtles – Watching loggerhead turtles swimming near the harbour was an unforgettable experience.

Day Trip to Fiskardo – A picturesque fishing village with stunning waterfront dining options.

Would We Go Back? Absolutely!

Kefalonia exceeded our expectations with its breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, and delicious food. Staying in Svoronata gave us a peaceful retreat while still being close to all the island’s must-visit spots. Opting for a villa over a hotel made our experience even more enjoyable, giving us the freedom and privacy to make the most of our holiday.

If you’re looking for a Greek island getaway that’s perfect for families, Kefalonia should be at the top of your list!
