Magical Maurtius

With a 25th wedding anniversary to celebrate last year and in need of some rest and relaxation, we headed off to Mauritius in October.

An ideal destination for a romantic honeymoon, wedding or, like us, to celebrate an anniversary, Mauritius is equally family friendly. Children and teenagers are well catered for in many of the hotels and family accommodation is well thought out. We were there over Halloween and the kids at our hotel were having a great time!

This tiny island nation in the Indian Ocean has idyllic, palm fringed, white beaches with sparkling azure water. Home to a multitude of colourful, tropical fish, snorkelling and diving is popular here. Water sports enthusiasts are well catered for, with a huge variety to choose from. If staying on dry land is more appealing, golf, hiking the many waterfalls and exploring the national parks are easy to arrange. Explore Port Louis, the island’s colourful capital, for a trip to the market and sample some delicious street food, try the Puri’s and Roti and Gauteau Piment, bitesize chilli dhal fritters. Get up close to the sharks and feed the sting rays at Odysseo Oceanarium. Visit the botanical gardens, the guides are entertaining and knowledgeable. Beachcomber Trou Aux Biches has everything you need for a comfortable holiday, on a magnificent stretch of beach, offering the most spectacular sunsets. The rooms are dotted around peaceful, spacious gardens, leading onto the beach. Each group of rooms shares a small pool, with the large, main pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. We had access to several restaurants, a couple of bars, a well-equipped gym, golf course, a water sports centre and an inviting spa.

A melting pot of cultures, makes for a varied cuisine, influenced by French, Indian, African, Chinese and British. The hotel restaurants were exceptionally good and the service, outstanding. My favourite restaurant was on the beach, sand between my toes, listening to the waves gently lapping the shore, perfect for a romantic dinner or a relaxed lunch.

The staff at the hotel went out of their way to make our stay memorable, genuinely, nothing was too much trouble. Similarly, out and about exploring the island, the locals are friendly and engaging.

We had an incredible trip and returned feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
