First Aboard The Royal Princess Cruise Ship

The Princess Royal has officially been named by her Godmother Kate the Duchess of Cambridge. I was one of the lucky ones to get to spend an afternoon exploring all she has to offer as well as an evening sampling the food and entertainment. From the first glimpse of the ship I have to say she definitely looked regal.

My self-guided tour took me all over and on many of the different decks. I got to see the owner’s suite but was surprised that it was not larger than it was. We were unable to view other penthouse suites as people were booked into them. However I had a deluxe balcony cabin which was more than adequate. In fact all the outside cabins have a balcony and there is no ocean view on this ship.

I checked out the gym and was very impressed – it was probably the best equipped gym I have seen on a cruise ship. Every piece of equipment had its own screen with a choice of channels to choose from whilst working off the calories that you will inevitably put on if you visit the ‘Pastry Shop’ - the largest of its kind at sea.

The Horizon Court and Bistro will also house novel areas such as ‘The Crab Shack’ which is a seafood fan feast and a Fondue station.

An innovation is the SeaWalk and Seawalk bar; a glass bottomed walkway that cantilevers out 28ft beyond the edge of the ship with views 128ft below. The Sanctuary is an adult only haven featuring cabanas, some of them private with refrigerators and flat screen TV’s. Movies under the stars is a Princess signature and on this latest addition to the fleet the screen is twice the size of previous ships. The atrium which spans 3 floors is simply stunning.

Dinner was served in one of the main dining rooms with a set five course menu and everything was delicious after which there was some entertainment laid on up on deck 16. Most people gravitated to this then filtered down into the other bars as the night drew to a close. We finished off in the Crooners Bar with a very entertaining singer/piano player.
