Do I need qualifications or certification to become a Travel Counsellor?
No formal travel qualification or previous travel-industry experience is required to become a Travel Counsellor, subject to the current entry requirements. Whether you’re new to travel, already working in the industry, returning after a career break or running your own agency, there’s a route to help you build the knowledge, skills and confidence to run your own travel business. Your existing experience can be valuable, but your customer focus, willingness to learn and commitment to building a business are just as important.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What experience do I need to become a Travel Counsellor?
You don’t need previous travel experience to become a Travel Counsellor. The Academy can help you learn about the travel industry, develop your sales skills and understand how to run your own business.
Experience in travel sales, corporate travel, customer service, hospitality, marketing, operations or business development can all provide a strong foundation.
If you’re researching what experience travel agents or travel consultants need, the most important qualities are a willingness to learn, the ability to build customer relationships and the motivation to develop your own business.
What training does the Travel Counsellors Academy provide?
Whether you choose the Leisure or Corporate Academy, you’ll receive training and support to develop your travel knowledge, build your confidence and start running your own business.
Leisure training covers the travel industry, selling holidays and experiences, using relevant systems and developing customer relationships.
Corporate training also covers business travel fundamentals, client communication, management information, supplier negotiation and account development, helping you win and retain corporate accounts.
Do Travel Counsellors need to be certified?
A formal travel-agent qualification, certificate or certification is not required to become a Travel Counsellor, subject to the current entry requirements.
The Travel Counsellors Academy provides the training needed to develop your industry knowledge, learn the relevant systems and build the skills required to run your business. This is different from holding a separate travel consultant qualification, travel agent certification or formal travel consultant certificate.
You may also come across supplier accreditation, industry memberships and company-level licences when researching whether travel consultants or travel agencies need to be certified.
These should not be confused with a personal qualification. The requirements that apply will depend on the business model, the type of travel being sold and the relevant regulations.
Can I offer ATOL protection as a Travel Counsellor?
Yes. Travel Counsellors holds an ATOL licence, so you can arrange ATOL-protected package holidays for customers through the Travel Counsellors business.
You don’t need to obtain an individual ATOL licence yourself. ATOL protection applies to qualifying package holidays that include a flight. Customers receive an ATOL Certificate confirming what is protected and who is covered.
Travel Counsellors also has an independent trust account that provides financial protection for non-flight holidays and standalone travel services.
What skills help Travel Counsellors succeed?
Formal qualifications are not the only way to prepare for a career as a travel consultant. Transferable skills and a willingness to learn can be just as valuable.
Building customer relationships
Strong customer relationships are at the heart of successful travel businesses. You’ll need to listen carefully, understand what customers want and build trust over time.
Communication, sales and commercial awareness
Clear communication helps you explain travel options, manage expectations and provide a confident service. Sales and commercial awareness can also help you identify suitable opportunities and build a sustainable business.
Organisation and attention to detail
Travel bookings involve dates, names, payments, preferences and arrangements that all need to be managed accurately. Good organisation and attention to detail are essential when coordinating complex itineraries and supporting customers.
Self-motivation and digital confidence
As a self-employed business owner, you’ll need to manage your time, follow up enquiries and take responsibility for developing your business. Confidence using digital tools, booking systems, email and online marketing can also help you work efficiently.
