Get to know Sue
Hi Sue! Could you start by telling us a little bit about you?
Family and wellbeing are at the heart of everything I do. I love living close to the coast and often spend my downtime walking along the beach or practising yoga to relax and recharge. When I’m at home, you’ll usually find me in the garden or planning my next trip, as gardening and travelling are two of my biggest passions.
How did you get into recruitment?
I have worked in the travel industry for over 25 years as a Sales Manager across both retail travel and luxury tour operations, liaising with supplier partners and experiencing many destinations first hand. Joining Travel Counsellors felt like the perfect next step, allowing me to draw on this experience and support people in starting and growing their own travel businesses.
What brought you to Travel Counsellors?
When choosing a company, it’s important to me that its values genuinely align with my own. I was drawn to Travel Counsellors because of its strong sense of community, people-first culture and excellent reputation in the industry. TC doesn’t just support business owners; it actively cares for and invests in its community, creating an environment where people can thrive both professionally and personally.
What do you love most about your job?
I love being part of someone’s dream and watching it become a reality. Taking the time to really get to know each person and understand what matters to them means I can support their decision in the right way. It’s incredibly rewarding to know I’ve played a part in helping them take that step when the time is right for them, and even after they have launched their business I still have the opportunity to continue our relationship and watch their businesses flourish which is extremely rewarding.
What’s been your highlight so far during your time at Travel Counsellors?
Some of the real highlights of this role have been seeing the Travel Counsellors I’ve recruited go on to achieve Gold status. Knowing I’ve played a part in supporting their decision to take that leap of faith, and then watching their businesses thrive, is incredibly rewarding.
What can prospective Travel Counsellors expect from the recruitment process?
Prospective Travel Counsellors can expect a personalised, supportive and unrushed experience. I treat every individual as exactly that – an individual – because everyone has their own reasons and motivations for wanting to start a franchise.
From the very first conversation, I’m here to guide and support them, making sure all their questions are answered so they have a clear and honest understanding of what’s involved. When they feel ready to explore things further, I will arrange a business meeting where we can walk through our systems together, talk in more detail about their business plan and help them picture what their future with Travel Counsellors could look like.
Only when it feels right for them do we move towards offering a franchise agreement. The pace is set entirely by them; it’s never something we rush. I know that timing is key to building a successful business, and our goal is to help them make the decision that is right for them and their circumstances.
How do you reassure people who have reservations about becoming a business owner?
We understand that making the decision to become a Travel Counsellor is a big step, and it’s natural to have questions or reservations.
To help with this, we connect prospective Travel Counsellors with members of our existing community who are already running successful businesses and are happy to share their experiences openly and honestly. This gives you the chance to speak directly to people who’ve been in your position and can answer your questions from a real-life perspective.
We also host Discovery Days at our support hub and external venues, where you can meet the team, hear more about how the business works and get a genuine feel for our culture and community in a relaxed, informal setting. Our aim is to give you all the insight and reassurance you need to decide whether TC is the right move for you.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to set up their own travel business?
I’d always encourage anyone considering a franchise to look carefully at both the practicalities and the support around them.
Firstly, make sure you have the financial security to afford the initial investment, plus enough funds to comfortably support yourself while you build your business in the early months. This removes a lot of pressure and gives you the headspace to focus on growth.
It’s also important to have, or be willing to build, a strong network of contacts. A supportive personal network, along with professional connections and potential clients, will make a real difference to your confidence and your long term success.
In your opinion, what do you think sets Travel Counsellors apart from other travel franchises?
What really sets Travel Counsellors apart is the combination of our technology, support and commercial offering. Our bespoke systems and tools make it easy for Travel Counsellors to run and grow their businesses efficiently, while having the confidence that they’re backed by a dedicated support team.
Alongside this, the breadth and flexibility of our product range means Travel Counsellors can act as both tour operator and travel agent, creating truly bespoke, end-to-end itineraries for their customers rather than being limited to off-the-shelf packages. This blend of technology, support and commercial strength gives our people a genuine competitive edge.
