Cruising with Azamara: A Boutique Voyage Focused on the Destination
It’s All About the Destination
Read all about my 3 days onboard Azamara Quest and find out what it's really like to cruise with Azamara.
There are cruises where the ship is the star, and then there are cruises where the world outside your window takes centre stage. Sailing onboard the beautiful Azamara Quest, I was reminded exactly why Azamara has built such a loyal following. This is cruising done differently.
This isn’t about waterslides, formal nights or packed daily schedules. Instead, it’s about immersing yourself in destinations, travelling deeper, and doing it all at your own pace.

It’s All About the Destination
From the moment you step onboard, it’s clear that Azamara’s philosophy is simple: stay longer, see more, experience deeper.
Unlike many cruise lines, Azamara offers more overnights and late-night departures, access to smaller and more unique ports, and carefully curated cultural experiences.
This means you’re not rushing back to the ship mid-afternoon. You’re enjoying dinner in port, wandering illuminated streets, or experiencing a destination after the crowds have gone.
Life Onboard Azamara Quest
The ship itself is elegant and intimate, carrying around 650 guests, which gives it a boutique hotel feel at sea.
My stateroom was beautifully designed, with plenty of space, a comfortable seating area, and everything you need to relax after a day exploring. While I stayed in an ocean view cabin, I would absolutely recommend upgrading to a veranda cabin or above if you can. There’s something special about starting your day with breakfast served on your own private balcony as the world drifts by.
The only downside to my room was the bathroom, it was really tiny. This was a shame but certainly not enough to put me off and spoil my cruise.
What really stood out onboard was the atmosphere. There are no constant announcements, no pressure to join organised activities, and no hard sell entertainment. You can do as much or as little as you like. It’s effortless, relaxed, and refreshingly unintrusive.
What Makes Azamara Special
Azamara quietly includes a huge amount of value, which makes the experience feel seamless. Gratuities are included, as well as select drinks and all room service. There are also signature events such as the White Night party and the AzAmazing Evening on longer sailings.
The highlight of my time onboard was my AzAmazing Evening where we went up to St. Michael's Caves in Gibraltar for a unique concert. It was such a special night.

Experiences Beyond the Daytime
One of the biggest differences with Azamara is what happens after the sun goes down.
Because of the late stays and overnights, you can enjoy evening meals in port, experience local nightlife, and take part in night-time excursions. These excursions are kept small, usually around 15 guests, which makes them feel much more personal and immersive.
It’s a completely different way of cruising, and one that really elevates the experience.
Dining onboard is another highlight. There are multiple venues offering high-quality cuisine, and if you’re staying in a suite, speciality dining is included. For other guests, it’s available at a reasonable supplement and is absolutely worth it.
But some of the most memorable meals might not even be onboard. They’ll be in destination, thanks to those longer port stays.
Who Is Azamara For
Azamara tends to attract travellers aged 45 and over, including empty nesters or those approaching retirement. Guests are typically curious, well travelled, and culturally minded.
That said, it’s not about age, it’s about mindset.
If you prefer exploring a destination over sitting by the pool, enjoy good food and authentic experiences, and want a cruise that feels relaxed and refined rather than busy and loud, then Azamara is a perfect fit.
It’s also a fantastic choice for first-time cruisers who may not like the idea of large ships or a typical cruise experience.
Azamara really shines when it comes to itineraries. They offer country-intensive voyages in places like Japan, Croatia, Spain and Mexico, as well as extended journeys and world cruises of up to 155 nights. These itineraries are designed to go beyond the obvious and allow you to go deeper rather than simply tick off destinations.
Final Thoughts
Cruising with Azamara, and especially my time on Azamara Quest, felt less like a traditional cruise and more like a journey through destinations, with a beautiful floating boutique hotel as your base.
The ship is stunning, the service is exceptional, and the inclusions add real value. But the real magic lies in how Azamara connects you to the places you visit.
If you’re looking for a cruise that is more immersive, more relaxed, and more focused on the destination than the ship, then Azamara should absolutely be on your list.
