From “Maybe Japan” to Elephants, Diving and Deserted Beaches

When this couple first got in touch with me, they had a simple brief on the surface: they had been married for 20 years and wanted to do something really special to celebrate. Like many of my clients, they were experienced travellers who usually pieced together their own holidays, but this time they wanted some help to make sure their anniversary trip was truly unforgettable.

“We’re pretty confident booking normal holidays ourselves, but this one felt too important to ‘wing it’.”

They had a rough budget in mind and an initial idea: Japan. It was somewhere they had long wanted to visit. But as we talked, it became clear that, for this particular trip, the time and money they had available would not let them “do Japan properly” in the way they imagined.

“We didn’t want a rushed, half‑baked version of Japan just because it was the first idea that came to mind.”

Rather than squeezing in a shortened version of a dream destination, we decided to step back and look at what they really wanted this milestone holiday to feel like.

Understanding what really mattered

Before we talked about hotels or flight times, we talked about them.

What do they enjoy when they travel? What do they avoid? How do they like to spend their days on holiday? How do they want to feel on their anniversary itself?

A few key things emerged:

• They wanted something that felt like an occasion, not just a nice break.
• They were open to somewhere completely new, as long as it felt special and a little adventurous.
• He is a keen diver and wanted the chance to get into the water somewhere memorable.
• She has always had a soft spot for elephants and dreamed of seeing them in person in the right way.
• They are not big city people, so short and focused time in any major city was fine, but they did not want their anniversary to be defined by traffic and skyscrapers.
• They are savvy with points and miles, often using them so they can fly in Business or First Class.

“What we really wanted was a mix: a bit of adventure, a bit of luxury, and something we’d both remember as ‘our’ trip, not just another tick on a list.”

Once those pieces were on the table, the destination almost chose itself.

Why Thailand, and why Elephant Hills?

When she mentioned her love of elephants, my mind immediately went to Thailand, and in particular to the soft‑adventure style of Elephant Hills. It offered the chance to spend time close to elephants in a natural setting, combined with jungle scenery and a complete contrast to their day‑to‑day life at home.

“As soon as you mentioned Elephant Hills it just clicked. Thailand hadn’t even been on our radar for the anniversary, but suddenly it made perfect sense.”

Neither of them had been to Thailand before, which gave the trip that extra sense of discovery you want for a 20th anniversary: something the two of them could experience for the first time together.

We also agreed on a planning structure that suited the way they like to travel. Because they collect and use points for their flights, it made sense for them to book their own long‑haul flights in the cabins they prefer, while I took care of:

• Internal flights within Thailand
• All ground arrangements
• Accommodation
• Transfers and timings
• Overall structure of the itinerary

With that in place, we could start building a journey around the two big wishes: elephants for her, diving and the ocean for him.

Shaping the perfect route

From our discussions, it was clear that they wanted a mix of gentle adventure, wildlife, and high‑end relaxation, with the city as more of a taster than a main course. We worked through several versions of the route, always tweaking based on their feedback, until the flow felt just right.

Here is how the trip finally came together.

A short introduction to Bangkok

We began with Bangkok, but kept it intentionally brief. They wanted to see it, enjoy some local food, and get a feel for the city, but not spend too long in the hustle and bustle.

A short stay gave them:

• Time to recover from the long‑haul flight
• A chance to visit a few key sights and enjoy a river or rooftop experience
• An immediate sense of “we’re really in Asia”, without being overwhelmed

“Bangkok was exactly the right length for us: long enough to get a feel for it, not long enough to get fed up with the traffic.”

From there, it was time to slow the pace and head to the coast.

Sea views, island‑hopping and diving in Krabi

Next, I sent them down to Krabi, a beautiful coastal region with those classic Thai limestone cliffs and turquoise waters. This part of the trip was designed around:

• Plenty of time on the water with boat trips around nearby islands such as Phi Phi
• Opportunities for him to enjoy some excellent diving
• Relaxed beach time for both of them in between their activities

“The days out on the boat and your suggested dive sites were incredible. It felt adventurous but never stressful.”

Krabi gave them the “wow” scenery and ocean experiences they were looking for, without the intensity of some of the busier resort areas.

The heart of the trip: Elephant Hills

From Krabi, the journey continued into the jungle and to Elephant Hills, which quickly became the emotional centrepiece of their anniversary.

This is where her long‑held dream of spending time with elephants came to life. Surrounded by lush greenery, they were able to:

• Experience elephants in a more natural environment
• Soak up the sounds and atmosphere of the forest
• Enjoy a softer, more immersive sense of adventure

“Being that close to the elephants, in such a beautiful setting, was honestly one of the most special experiences we’ve ever shared.”

It was a complete contrast to their coastal days and added a powerful, memorable layer to the trip that felt exactly right for a 20‑year celebration.

A luxurious finale on the beach in Khao Lak

For their final stop, they wanted to end on a high: somewhere luxurious, calm and beautiful, where they could simply relax and reflect on the previous days.

Khao Lak was the perfect choice:

• A lovely stretch of coastline with quality resorts
• A quieter feel compared to some of Thailand’s busier beaches
• The right level of comfort and indulgence for a special anniversary

“Khao Lak was the ideal ending: peaceful, luxurious and just the right place to look back on everything we’d done.”

Here, the pace slowed right down. Think lazy breakfasts, walks on the sand, sunset drinks and long, unhurried evenings.

Refining the details together

This itinerary did not appear in one go. We went through a few different iterations together, adjusting:

• How long they spent in Bangkok
• The balance between activity days and pure relaxation
• Which hotels felt most “them” in each area
• The order and pacing of each stop

They knew they did not want too long in a big city, so Bangkok was shortened. They wanted enough time in Krabi for diving and boat trips without feeling rushed. Elephant Hills was protected as the central “experience” stay. And their final days in Khao Lak were ring‑fenced as a proper wind‑down.

“You listened every time we said ‘a bit more of this, a bit less of that’ and the itinerary just kept getting closer to what we had in our heads.”

This back‑and‑forth is one of the most valuable parts of working with a Travel Counsellor: it is not a one‑size‑fits‑all package, it is a trip that is gently tuned until it fits.

Making the journey seamless

Behind the scenes, my role was to make sure that everything worked smoothly once their flights were booked using points.

That meant:

• Coordinating internal flights around their long‑haul timings
• Organising transfers between airports, hotels and Elephant Hills so each move felt as easy as possible
• Ensuring there was enough breathing space between travel days and “big experience” days

I also look after little details that make a disproportionate difference. In this case, I knew that he is a very tall gentleman, so when it came to reserving seats I made sure to secure extra legroom wherever possible on the flights I was handling.

“The fact you’d thought about things like extra‑legroom seats without us even asking made us feel so cared for. It’s those little touches that really stood out.”

It is not the sort of thing that appears on a glossy brochure, but it is exactly the kind of consideration that helps a complex trip feel comfortable and looked after.

A trip that truly belonged to them

By the time they flew home, they had enjoyed a journey that felt like it had been built just for them:

• He had the chance to dive in beautiful, warm waters and enjoy time on the ocean.
• She had her long‑imagined elephant experience and loved every moment of it.
• Together, they discovered Thailand for the first time, moving from city to sea to jungle to quiet beach, without the sense of being rushed or constantly on the move.

“It genuinely felt like ‘our’ trip, not something we’d just picked out of a brochure. Every stop had a reason and a memory attached to it.”

Most importantly, their 20th anniversary was not defined by a single hotel or a single activity, but by a series of experiences that reflected who they are as a couple: adventurous, thoughtful, and keen to make the most of their time together.

“For a big milestone like this, having you put it all together took the pressure off us completely. We could just enjoy it.”

For me, that is exactly what a milestone trip should be.
