My Journey - Mount Toubkal, Morocco
Reflections Taking on Toubkal: My Moroccan Adventure
In the first week of September, I packed my bags and headed to Morocco to tackle Mount Toubkal – North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167m. I signed up for the challenge to push myself and raise funds for Reuben’s Retreat and The Intrepid Foundation. What I didn’t expect was how much this adventure would stay with me.

Arriving in Marrakech was a mix of excitement and nerves. I joined nine fellow Travel Counsellors, and as we swapped prep stories, I quietly wondered if I was ready. Our first night at Riad Hamdane gave us time to explore the souks and enjoy a delicious dinner at DarDar – the perfect start.
The next day, we left the city and travelled up into the Atlas Mountains, our minibus winding higher until we reached the peaceful village of Imlil. Staying at Riad Jnane, surrounded by mountain scenery it was a total contrast from Marrakech. We set out on a gentle 6k hike around Imlil, passing waterfalls and terraces with panoramic views that were the vast. I couldn't believe how quickly the landscape had changed. Along the walk we stopped for lunch which was hosted by a local family in their home for a simple, delicious, and served with genuine warmth. That evening, in preparation for what was coming we were treated to a yoga session to stretch our legs - a small luxury before tackling the demanding parts of our trek.
The real physical challenge started on day three: a 12km hike up to the Toubkal Refuge, our base camp for the summit attempt. The route took us through rocky landscapes, a steady climb through the valley. At times, it was tough, particularly as the altitude increased and the trail got steeper. With pit stops along the way and lots of encouragement, we reached the refuge exhausted but excited for what was ahead.
At 4am, we set out with head torches, the sky full of stars and the air much colder than previous days. The climb to the summit seemed endless at times, physically and mentally demanding – it has to be the toughest thing I’ve ever done. But getting to the top and realising how high we were and how far we had travelled on foot was a moment I’ll never forget.
After summiting, we made our way back down to the refuge, where we recharged with a well-earned sleep before beginning the trek back down to Imlil in the morning. Retracing our steps through the valleys, sore but full of pride, I felt a huge sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the support of the group.
Our trip wrapped up with a return to Marrakech, where we joined a city tour with an Urban Adventures – Intrepid Travel guide, visiting Bahia Palace and enjoying lunch at a local women’s cooperative, which felt like a true hidden gem. This final taste of Moroccan hospitality was inspiring in its own right and a great way to end the journey. It also gave us time to meet the Intrepid head office team and reflect on the impact our fundraising efforts could make.
This trek reminded me how powerful it is to step outside your comfort zone. It tested me physically, but also gave me perspective and gratitude. I feel so grateful to have shared it with an amazing group of Travel Counsellors and colleagues.
