South Africa: so much more than safari

Alexa Moore on 03 Jan 2026

South Africa: so much more than safari... it is one of those destinations that really does offer a bit of everything.

Yes, the safari experiences are incredible, but what makes it such a special holiday is how easily you can combine wildlife, food, scenery, culture, coast and city life in one beautifully planned trip.

For first-timers, Cape Town is often the perfect place to start. Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Boulders Beach penguins, Camps Bay and the Cape Peninsula all make it a brilliant base for exploring. It works just as well for couples wanting boutique hotels, great restaurants and views, as it does for families who like variety and easy day trips.

From Cape Town, the Winelands are a lovely change of pace. Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are known for their vineyard views, excellent food and relaxed atmosphere. Even if wine is not the main focus, the scenery, hotels and restaurants make this a really memorable stop.

The Garden Route is where South Africa comes into its own for a self-drive adventure. Think wide beaches, forests, lagoons, small coastal towns and plenty of places to stop along the way. Plettenberg Bay and Knysna are great options for families, while couples will love the freedom, scenery and boutique places to stay.

And then, of course, there is safari. My insider tip for families is to look at the Eastern Cape, which pairs beautifully with the Garden Route and offers malaria-free safari options. For a more classic safari experience, the Kruger area and nearby private reserves are fantastic, especially for honeymoons, milestone trips or anyone wanting something really special.

Cricket fans

South Africa is also a great choice for sports fans. With England Men heading to South Africa this winter for a Test and ODI tour, including matches in Johannesburg, Centurion, Cape Town, Paarl and Bloemfontein, it is a brilliant time to start thinking about a holiday that combines cricket, safari, coast and Cape Town.

What I love most about South Africa is how each trip can be tailored - it can be relaxed and luxurious, adventurous and active, family-friendly, foodie, romantic, or a little bit of everything. The key is getting the route right, allowing enough time in each place, and choosing hotels and lodges that suit the way you like to travel.

For couples, it is perfect for romance, scenery, wine, food and once-in-a-lifetime safari moments. For families, it offers wildlife, beaches, space, adventure and experiences children will remember for years.

If South Africa is on your list, I’d love to help plan a trip that feels seamless, personal and perfectly paced.
