Falling for California: My Ultimate West Coast Road Trip

From Golden Gate Bridge to Santa Monica, discover the moments that made me fall in love with the Golden State

Hello again, travel enthusiasts! I'm Amy McFadden, a travel counsellor based in not-so-sunny Belfast, Northern Ireland. I work with adventure lovers all over the world to plan the perfect trip. In my third blog post for the Travel Counsellors website, we embark on a journey to California—a destination that has completely captured my heart thanks to its diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, and endless possibilities for adventure. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a sun seeker, a wine lover, or a culture vulture, California truly has something for everyone. Let me take you through not just what makes it special—but why it’s one of my personal favourites.

California – What’s all the fuss about?

With its stunning coastline, breathtaking national parks, and world-renowned cities, California really does offer something for everyone. But what makes it unforgettable is how each place feels.

I’ll never forget my first moments in San Francisco—standing in the cool morning air, watching the mist roll over the Golden Gate Bridge before walking across it myself. It’s one of those experiences that truly lives up to expectations.

A short trip across the bay brought me to Sausalito, a peaceful, sun-soaked contrast to the city, before stepping back in time on Alcatraz Island—a fascinating and slightly eerie experience that I’d recommend to anyone visiting.

From there, the journey only gets better.

Outdoor Enthusiasts

For those seeking outdoor adventures, California's natural wonders are second to none. Explore the world-renowned Yosemite National Park, home to soaring granite cliffs, gushing waterfalls, and pristine meadows.

But for me, nothing quite compares to driving through Big Sur. Winding roads, dramatic cliffs, and endless ocean views—it’s one of the most breathtaking coastal drives in the world.

One of my favourite stops along the way was Nepenthe, where the food was incredible, but the views were even better. Sitting there, high above the Pacific, is a moment I’ll never forget.

Along the route, I also stopped at Elephant Seal Vista Point, where you can watch these amazing creatures in their natural habitat—loud, lazy, and completely fascinating!

Sun Seekers

California's sunny beaches beckon visitors from around the world.

There’s something special about arriving in Santa Monica—that laid-back, beachy atmosphere, the sound of waves, and the iconic pier. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a road trip.

Wine Enthusiasts

Wine lovers can indulge their senses in California's renowned wine regions. Tour the prestigious wineries in Napa Valley, where vineyards span rolling hills and produce mouth-watering vintages.

I also loved the wine scene around Santa Barbara—a little more relaxed, with stunning coastal scenery to match.

Culture Vultures

Immerse yourself in the vibrant cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, where culture and creativity thrive.

In LA, it’s hard not to get caught up in the energy of Hollywood. Visiting the studios and seeing behind the scenes of the film world was a real highlight for me—especially if, like me, you grew up watching American TV and films.

California’s Highway One: The Ultimate Road Trip Experience

If you're seeking the ultimate road trip experience, California's Highway One is an absolute must—and I can honestly say it’s one of the best trips I’ve ever done.

Starting in San Francisco and making my way south, I stopped in Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea—both charming coastal spots with plenty to see and do.

Further along, I visited the incredible Hearst Castle, a place that feels more like a movie set than a real home.

On the way to Santa Barbara, I made a stop in Solvang—a completely unexpected Danish-inspired town filled with bakeries, wine, and charm.

Finally, the journey ends in Los Angeles, where sandy beaches and vibrant city life meet. It really needs no introduction.

If, like me, you’ve spent much of your life captivated by Californian culture through American TV and films, it’s something you have to experience for yourself.

And the best part? Every trip can be completely tailored to you.

I can help with everything from planning the perfect road trip route to recommending hotels and unforgettable experiences along the way.

Let’s have a chat and start planning your own California adventure.
