Conquering Mount Toubkal: My Charity Trek for Reuben’s Retreat
If you had told me a year ago that I would be standing at the top of North Africa’s highest peak, gazing out over the vast Sahara with tired legs and a full heart, I might not have believed you.

If you had told me a year ago that I would be standing at the top of North Africa’s highest peak, gazing out over the vast Sahara with tired legs and a full heart, I might not have believed you. But that’s exactly where I found myself after a journey that tested both my spirit and my stamina, all in support of the wonderful charity Reuben’s Retreat in Glossop. Here’s the story of my Mount Toubkal trek, and why I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.
The Adventure Begins: Marrakech to Imlil
My journey started in the vibrant city of Marrakech, a whirlwind of colour, spice, and energy. After just one night to soak in the sights and gather my thoughts, our group was whisked away by coach to Imlil—a tranquil Berber village nestled in the Atlas Mountains.
Imlil, with its cool mountain air, proved the perfect place to acclimatise. That evening, a local family welcomed us into their home for an authentic Moroccan dinner. We broke bread together and enjoyed a simple yet delicious vegetable Tagine, a reminder of how food can bring people together—no matter where you are in the world.
The Ascent: Grit and Determination
After a night in Imlil’s quiet embrace, it was time for the real adventure to begin. We trekked for around eight hours, each step a gradual climb higher into the mountains. The scenery grew more dramatic, and the air noticeably thinner. By the time we reached the mountain refuge base camp, tired but exhilarated, I understood why these refuges are best described as “functional.” Packed into a small room with seven other climbers and rows of bunk beds, sleep was more a hope than a promise.
Summit Day: The Final Push
Summit day began in darkness—3 AM found me lacing my boots by head torch, nerves and excitement vying for attention. The path ahead was steep and challenging, a scramble over rocks and scree. The effects of altitude were real: every breath was hard-earned and at times, I honestly questioned if I could keep going. But the determination to support Reuben’s Retreat, and the encouragement from fellow trekkers, kept me moving upwards.
Finally, by late morning, the summit came into view: a moment of pure elation. Standing at the top, with the vast Moroccan landscape unfurling before me and the golden sands of the Sahara glimmering far below, I felt a surge of pride and gratitude. We celebrated with photos and quiet reflection—one of those rare moments when effort and reward come together perfectly.
The Descent and Beyond
What goes up must come down, and the trek back to base camp was no easier than the climb—my toes will certainly attest to that! But each step was lighter, fuelled by the joy of accomplishment and the knowledge that our efforts had raised around £15,000 for a vital cause back home.
Reflections
Climbing Mount Toubkal was more than just a physical challenge; it was an emotional journey of self-discovery and shared purpose. The warmth of the Berber communities, the bonds forged with fellow climbers, and the breathtaking beauty of Morocco’s mountains will stay with me forever. But most of all, I’m proud to have contributed to the ongoing work of Reuben’s Retreat—a reminder that every step taken in the mountains, no matter how tough, was a step towards hope for families in need.
If you’re seeking your next adventure, I’d urge you: let the mountains call to you. You might just surprise yourself with what you can achieve.
