Family Fun, Forest Trails, and a Hot Tub Retreat in Cartmel

A Rainy, Rambly, Wonderful Week in the Lake District.

We’ve just returned from a gorgeous week in the Lake District, and honestly—it was everything we hoped for: muddy boots, misty lake views, woodland adventures, and plenty of cosy moments to warm up afterwards. We stayed at Swardale Lodge, Meadow End in Cartmel, a peaceful little spot that gave us the perfect base for exploring the southern Lakes. The hot tub didn’t hurt either—especially after long hikes and soggy weather!

First Stop: Grange-over-Sands & Morecambe Bay Views

Early in the week, we headed into Grange-over-Sands and wandered along the promenade. The views across Morecambe Bay were stunning—vast and atmospheric, with that coastal hush that makes you just stop and breathe it all in. Even our puggle, Bruce, seemed to be taking it all in (when he wasn’t pulling us along the path, nose to the ground).

Cruising Lake Windermere

One of the highlights of the trip was our Lake Windermere cruise. We set off from Ambleside, gliding across the lake’s dark, glistening water down to Bowness. Even with the grey skies, the views were magical—mist curling over the hills and little boats bobbing by the shore. It felt like a scene straight out of a storybook. And despite the drizzle, our 7-year-old loved every second (especially the on-board snacks).

Grizedale Forest Adventures

If you’re visiting with kids, Grizedale Forest is a must. We spent a day here doing the Go Ape high ropes course—such a brilliant family activity (and yes, it gets the adrenaline going!). Afterwards, we calmed things down with the Stick Man trail, which was a real hit. Bruce enjoyed the forest paths just as much as our little one did. It’s such a family- and dog-friendly place to explore.

A Wet Day Well Spent: The Lakeland Motor Museum

When the rain really came down, we found shelter at the Lakeland Motor Museum—and it turned out to be an unexpected gem. Packed with classic cars, motorbikes, vintage displays, and even a bit of local motoring history, it was a hit for all of us. Our 7-year-old was fascinated, and it made for a great dry, indoor day out. Definitely a top choice if you’re caught in a downpour but still want to make the most of the day.

Hiking to Rydal Cave

One of our favourite walks was the scenic route from White Moss to Rydal Cave. It was a peaceful, manageable hike that still offered plenty of wow moments. The cave itself was moody and atmospheric, with its still water and echoey space, perfect for a short pause and a few photos. Even in damp conditions, it was such a rewarding walk—and Bruce loved it too.

Sunny Skies and Lakeside Vibes in Grasmere

On another day, the sun finally made an appearance—and we made the most of it with a separate walk around Grasmere. The change in weather was glorious! The lake shimmered under blue skies, people were swimming, paddleboarding, and picnicking, and the whole area had a real holiday feel. It was such a contrast to the rest of the week and gave us a proper summer moment in the middle of our wild-weather adventure.

Cosy Evenings & Hot Tub Moments

Back at the lodge, we made the most of the evenings: warm showers, hot chocolate (or wine!), and time in the hot tub under the trees. There’s something so relaxing about bubbling water and cool mountain air, especially after a day on your feet. Bruce usually curled up on his blanket inside, exhausted after his day’s adventures.

Final Thoughts

Despite the damp weather, the Lake District gave us exactly what we needed: a proper family break filled with nature, adventure, and quiet moments. Swardale Lodge was a peaceful retreat, and every day brought something new to discover—from lakeside strolls to treetop climbs. The Lakeland Motor Museum was a perfect surprise, and that sunny day in Grasmere brought the cherry on top—a moment of pure holiday bliss.

The combination of family time, fresh air, and freedom to explore made it a trip we’ll definitely remember.

If you’re thinking of heading to the Lakes with kids and a dog, we can’t recommend it enough—just don’t forget your waterproofs (and maybe your swimsuit too)!
