Istanbul in 48 Hours: Football, Food and Unforgettable Moments

Becky Reade on 19 May 2026

When Aston Villa reached the final of the Europa League, there was only ever going to be one answer to the question, “Shall we go?” My friend and I booked our trip and set off to Istanbul, hoping to see our beloved team lift the trophy and to squeeze as much as we could into just 48 hours in this incredible city.

Touchdown and Turkish Grills

By the time we arrived on Tuesday evening, we were running on very little sleep and a lot of excitement. Our first stop: a traditional Turkish grill.

We settled into a cosy restaurant where various meats were sizzling away in front of us, cooked over an open grill. Plates of rich, smoky lamb and chicken arrived with all the sumptuous accompaniments: soft, warm bread, vibrant salads, grilled vegetables and dips so delicious you want to mop up every last bit.

Dinner rolled seamlessly into our first taste of the pre‑match atmosphere. We wandered into a local bar and joined fellow Aston Villa fans, plus plenty of curious locals. A few beers later, with chants starting to echo through the streets and the adrenaline finally giving way to exhaustion, we called it a night. After an epic journey and minimal sleep, bed had never felt so good.

Slow Morning, Big City

Wednesday was match day, but with kick‑off not until 22:00, we had plenty of time to explore. Istanbul is perfect for wandering: a maze of narrow streets, small shops and hidden corners that invite you to keep going “just a bit further”.

We strolled through the backstreets and made our way down towards the Bosphorus. The waterfront was full of life: boats gliding past, fishermen lined up along the railings, and that constant sense of movement where Europe and Asia meet across the water.

The mosques we passed were beautiful, their domes and minarets creating such a striking skyline. One of my favourite moments, though, was the simplest: sitting in a little café, sipping on Turkish tea and watching the world go by. Locals catching up with friends, tourists with cameras at the ready, and the hum of the city carrying on all around us.

Match Night Magic

As the afternoon faded, it was finally time to switch into full match mode. We pulled on our Villa shirts and headed out to join the fans gathering in the bars. The streets were alive with colour and noise: songs breaking out on every corner, flags waving, and a brilliant atmosphere between both sets of supporters.

The Tüpraş Stadium was around a 20‑minute walk from the centre, and that walk felt like a slow build‑up to something special. Crowds flowed in the same direction, sharing smiles, chants and that nervous excitement you only get before a big game.

Once inside, the noise was incredible. For 90 minutes we watched the kind of football you dream about on a European night. Aston Villa were superb, and when the final whistle blew and we were crowned European champions, it felt like one of those “I’ll never forget this” moments. Seeing our team win a European trophy, in such an iconic city, surrounded by thousands of fellow fans, is something that will stay with me forever.

A Short Trip, Big Memories

All too quickly, our 48 hours were up and it was time to head home, tired but absolutely buzzing. Istanbul gave us everything we could have hoped for: fantastic food, warm hospitality, beautiful sights and a football memory of a lifetime.

It might have been a short break, but it was packed full of special moments: smoky grills, sweet Turkish tea, Bosphorus views, and the joy of seeing Aston Villa lift a European trophy.

Sometimes the quickest trips turn out to be the most memorable, and Istanbul certainly proved that.
