Fig Tree Bay
We travelled with the grandparents to Protaras and spent a relaxing week on the beachfront, staying bed and breakfast so we could make the most of the local restaurants each evening. With so many places to eat, from traditional tavernas to more contemporary spots, we were truly spoilt for choice.
We stayed at the Vangelis Hotel in a one‑bedroom suite, which was perfect for us and the children, who are 11 and 14. The suite was spacious, tastefully decorated and gave us plenty of room to spread out and unwind after long days in the sun.
Most of our days were spent between Fig Tree Bay and Bikini Beach. The water sports on offer were fantastic, and with teenagers to keep entertained that was a real bonus. From the moment we arrived, we were never short of something to do. The sea was beautifully clear, with that inviting turquoise colour, and the sand soft and powdery underfoot. The only drawback in August is the popularity of the beaches, so you do need an early start if you want to secure sunbeds, as it does get very busy.
We could not visit Cyprus without trying a traditional meze, and it did not disappoint. Dish after dish of delicious local specialities kept arriving at the table. It was all absolutely gorgeous, but be warned: you will almost certainly need a nap afterwards.
A real highlight of the holiday for me was the Kamakura Teppanyaki restaurant. The food was outstanding and the chefs were entertaining from start to finish, turning dinner into a show the whole family enjoyed. It is definitely somewhere we would return to on our next visit.
Overall, Protaras was a brilliant choice for a multigenerational holiday: lovely beachfront location, plenty of activities for older children, great food and a comfortable, stylish base at the Vangelis Hotel. It is a place we would happily go back to again.
