5 Dazzling Days in Las Vegas
There is nowhere quite like Las Vegas. I have just returned from a five‑day escape with two friends, staying at the iconic Caesars Palace, to celebrate joint 50th birthdays, the perfect excuse for a big celebration trip. Over the years I have booked Las Vegas for lots of clients, so I loved finally experiencing it first hand and seeing so many of the hotels and attractions I have talked about for so long.
First Impressions & Caesars Palace
We arrived in the evening, which I would highly recommend if you want that instant “wow” moment. As we descended over the desert, the Strip appeared like a glowing ribbon of colour, with the Sphere and the Stratosphere clearly in view. It genuinely felt like flying into a film set.
After a quick journey from the airport, we crawled along the busy Strip in our taxi, which actually gave us time to take in the neon, billboards and huge resorts. We checked into Caesars Palace, whose Roman‑inspired façade and grand marble lobby feel wonderfully over the top. Our first night was low key: an early night to recharge.
We stayed in an executive suite in the Julius Tower, which worked brilliantly for three friends. The separate living area made getting ready and relaxing together much easier. Caesars was a great base: very central, with a huge choice of bars, restaurants and, of course, slot machines.
The pool complex was a highlight, with loungers and cabanas. The only downside was the lack of umbrellas around the main pools, so shade was limited unless you hired a cabana, which is worth bearing in mind in the heat. Relaxing by the pool was simply divine.
Exploring the Strip & A Grand Canyon Highlight
Our first full day began with breakfast at Alexxa’s at the Paris hotel, right opposite the Bellagio. A Mimosa, lovely food and Strip views felt like the perfect start. We then took the Deuce bus to the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, before exploring Mandalay Bay, Shark Reef, Luxor and Excalibur.
Although it was March, temperatures hit around 35 degrees each day, and one of my friends was suffering with bad sciatica, so we kept walks manageable and made good use of buses, the monorail and Uber. Comfortable shoes, sun protection and plenty of water are non‑negotiable in Vegas.
Wednesday was our big bucket‑list day: a helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon. We flew over Hoover Dam, then actually landed down in the canyon rift. It was just us, the rock formations and complete stillness, with champagne and snacks in the most surreal setting. On the way back I sat in the front as we flew over the Strip, which really showed off the scale of the city.
Back in town we refuelled at Excalibur’s good‑value buffet, then I braved the rollercoaster at New York‑New York and we continued to the Flamingo to see the flamingos and enjoy a cocktail.
Big‑Kid Fun, The Sphere & Fremont Street
Other highlights included riding the High Roller at night for incredible Strip views, a gondola ride at The Venetian, and two brilliant shows: The Las Vegas Show at Planet Hollywood on Monday (a great introduction to the city’s story) and Mystère at Treasure Island on Tuesday, with all the acrobatics and atmosphere you would expect from Cirque du Soleil.
On our last afternoon we visited The Sphere to see The Wizard of Oz, and on our final night we headed downtown to Fremont Street. It has a more old‑school feel, is noticeably cheaper than the main Strip, and the zip wire under the illuminated canopy was huge fun. We rounded off the trip with a drink at the glittering Chandelier Bar in the Cosmopolitan.
Classic Vegas Moments & Final Thoughts
We, of course, watched the Bellagio fountains, first from Beer Park opposite, then from the Bellagio side so we could really hear the music. If you can, do both.
From this trip I would recommend Las Vegas for friends’ getaways, milestone celebrations, short, high‑impact breaks or as part of a multi-trip itinerary. With thoughtful pacing, some pool time and a mix of Strip and downtown, it works just as well for those who need a gentler pace as it does for those who want to go full‑throttle.
