PURA VIDA IN COSTA RICA
Have You Ever Fancied Costa Rica? This Is Why You Should Go!
Have you ever fancied Costa Rica but not quite known where to start, or wondered if it really lives up to the hype? Let me reassure you, it absolutely does. After joining a truly inspiring Costa Rica webinar with Not In The Guidebooks, I am buzzing with ideas for the most incredible “Pura Vida” adventures. Costa Rica is a land of volcanoes and cloud forest, wild beaches and wildlife, coffee farms and jungle canals. It is also one of the greenest, most sustainable countries on earth, so if you care about nature and responsible travel, it ticks every box. Below is a taste of an itinerary that shows you exactly why Costa Rica should be on your list.
A Journey Through Costa Rica
San José - your soft landing in Central America
Your adventure begins with a night in San José, the capital. This is your
chance to shake off the jet lag, settle into the rhythm of Costa Rican life and
enjoy a first taste of local culture, markets and cuisine.
Tortuguero - turtles, canals and Caribbean magic
Next, you head to Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast, a place that can only be
reached by boat. Cruising along jungle-lined canals, you are surrounded by
dense rainforest, birdlife and the calls of monkeys. Between July and October,
you can witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles - turtles coming ashore to
nest and tiny hatchlings making their way to the sea.
Tamarindo - golden sands and Pacific sunsets
From the rainforest to the beach, the journey continues to Tamarindo on the
Pacific coast. Picture wide golden sands, fiery sunsets and a relaxed surf-town
atmosphere. This is where you slow down, swim, try a surf lesson if you fancy
it, or simply enjoy sunset cocktails by the ocean.
La Fortuna & Arenal - hot springs and volcano views
Moving inland, La Fortuna sits in the shadow of the majestic Arenal Volcano.
Here you can bathe in natural hot springs, walk lava trails, zip-line through
the canopy or simply soak up those iconic volcano views. It is the perfect
blend of soft adventure and indulgent relaxation.
Monteverde - mystical cloud forest
Next stop is Monteverde, famous for its enchanting cloud forest. Mist drifts
through the trees, hanging bridges span deep ravines and the air is alive with
hummingbirds, butterflies and howler monkeys. Guided walks by day and night
reveal an astonishing diversity of wildlife and plants.
Santa Juana - authentic rural life
For something truly off the beaten track, Santa Juana offers a glimpse into
traditional rural Costa Rica. Think coffee, sugar cane and small farms
surrounded by forested hills and waterfalls. It is a chance to slow down, meet
local people and experience a more authentic, community-based side of the
country.
Corcovado & Caño Island - one of the wildest places on
earth
On the Osa Peninsula, Corcovado National Park is often described as one of the
most biologically intense places on the planet. Dense rainforest, scarlet
macaws, monkeys, tapirs and a wealth of other species make this a true wildlife
paradise. Nearby Caño Island offers superb snorkelling, with clear waters and
abundant marine life.
Carara National Park - crocodile country
Before you head home, there is time to explore Carara National Park, known for
its rich birdlife and the famous crocodile-filled river. A guided river tour
brings you up close (but safely) to these prehistoric giants, along with
countless birds and other creatures, before a final night back in San José.
Why Costa Rica Is So Special
Costa Rica is not just another beautiful destination. It stands out for so many reasons:
- A true biodiversity hotspot, home to around 5% of the world’s biodiversity
- Around 99% of its energy comes from renewable sources
- Regularly ranked among the world’s greenest countries, with vast areas protected as national parks and reserves
- One of the world’s five “Blue Zones”, where people famously live longer, healthier lives
- Over 200 volcanic formations and more than 900 bird species
- Coffee is a way of life, woven into the culture as much as the landscape
- “Pura Vida” is far more than a greeting: it is a philosophy of optimism, simplicity and laid-back, stress-free living
Travel With Local Expertise
One of the things that really shone through in the webinar was the insight of Roberto, the local expert behind the Not In The Guidebooks itineraries. He designs these authentic journeys and is often on hand to meet and accompany guests, adding that insider knowledge and personal warmth that turn a good holiday into a truly unforgettable one.
Getting There Is Easier Than Ever
There is more good news too. British Airways have introduced a new direct flight from London Heathrow to San José, operating five times a week, which makes this incredible destination even more accessible from the UK.
