The Viking Difference

Journey to the Land of Legends: My Viking Jupiter Cruise Adventure

Sailing North from Scotland to Norway

Claire Holmes on 17 Jul 2025

There are cruises that simply transport you from port to port, and then there are journeys that linger in memory, defined by breathtaking scenery, effortless elegance, and moments that make you pause in wonder. Sailing aboard Viking Jupiter from Newhaven (near Edinburgh), heading north to Invergordon, the Shetland Islands, and onwards to Bergen, I discovered the true meaning of a seamless, premium ocean voyage.

Onboard Viking Jupiter: Effortless Elegance at Sea

From the moment I stepped onto Viking Jupiter, it was clear this ship was something special. With its signature Scandinavian design, every space feels open, light, and welcoming, but not compromising on quality and opulence.

There’s an abundance of communal areas, from the serene Wintergarden for afternoon tea, to the panoramic Explorers’ Lounge, perfect for contemplating the changing seascapes. There are stunning views from every corner of this ship.

What truly stands out is the sense of tranquillity onboard. There’s no jostling for sun loungers, no frantic queuing at meal times: everything flows at an easy, considered pace. The staff anticipate your needs quietly, and the exceptional food ranges from inventive Nordic cuisine to international favourites, all crafted with fresh ingredients and enjoyed in settings both intimate and social. From a morning cappuccino to an evening cocktail at the Aquavit Terrace, there’s an understated luxury in every detail.

With fewer than a thousand guests, Viking Jupiter never feels crowded. Spacious staterooms, all with private verandas, delightful spa facilities, and thoughtfully curated enrichment activities elevate every day at sea.

Edinburgh & Newhaven: A Regal Beginning

Embarking in Newhaven, just a stone's throw from Edinburgh, there’s a sense of anticipation. Many choose to spend an extra day exploring Scotland’s capital beforehand: cobbled Royal Mile, iconic castle, and the lively spirit of the city. Getting from the port to the City centre is easy, thanks to the trams that run directly from near the port from early in the morning to late evening.

Invergordon & Inverness: Highland Beauty

Sailing north, our first major stop is Invergordon: gateway to the Scottish Highlands. From here, we ventured to Inverness, a city that balances charm with history. A wander along the River Ness is enchanting, but it's the surrounding scenery — rolling hills, mysterious Loch Ness, and historic castles — that truly captivates. Tours here often include whisky distilleries or a chance to search for Nessie, and the Highlands’ legend-filled landscape leaves you spellbound.  If you are a fan of the very popular TV series Highlander - then you are in for a treat.  Grab a tour of some famous sites included in the series.

Shetland: Ponies & Wild Landscapes

Next, we sailed to the Shetland Islands, where the North Sea meets untamed beauty.   On Shetland, the famous Shetland ponies awaited: small, shaggy-maned, and captivating. Our scenic tour took us past windswept cliffs, ancient archaeological sites, and coastal pastures dotted with these unique ponies. There’s a feeling of stepping into another world, shaped by Norse heritage and wild, untouched nature.

Bergen: Norwegian Gem on a Record-Breaking Day

The final leg carried us across to Bergen, a city cradled by mountains and fjords. We docked on what would be the hottest day Bergen had seen in 75 years — locals were celebrating, swimming in the harbours, and basking in the surprising sunshine. We explored Bergen’s colourful Bryggen Wharf, wandered its cobblestone streets alive with history, and sampled fresh seafood at the lively fish market.

A special highlight was the Floibanen funicular (cable car) ride up Mount Fløyen. At the summit, panoramic views over Bergen and the surrounding fjordland simply took our breath away: a fitting coda to a journey defined by spectacular scenery.

One of the true highlights of our voyage was a candle lit evening  spent in Viking Jupiter’s Nordic-inspired LivNordic Spa. Designed to reflect the wellness traditions of Scandinavia, the spa is a sanctuary of calm, light, and natural materials. We indulged in the signature Nordic spa ritual: an invigorating circuit that moved between the soothing warmth of the sauna, the refreshing chill of the snow grotto (yes, real snow at sea!), and tranquil hydrotherapy pools. Each element is thoughtfully created to revitalise both body and mind, leaving you genuinely refreshed. The attentive spa staff were on hand with expert guidance, ensuring the experience was both authentic and deeply restorative. A core memory was made after our ritual out on deck for the most spectacular sunset. It was the perfect way to unwind: an easy-going, luxurious escape that truly set Viking Jupiter apart from other ships.
