🌴 Maldives Resort Transfers: What to Expect (and How to Get Them Right)
The Maldives remains one of my most requested luxury destinations, and one question comes up time and again: how do resort transfers actually work?
Hotel transfers are rarely considered a highlight of a holiday, but in the Maldives they’re very much part of the experience. Transfers are organised by the resorts themselves, and having experienced every option personally, here’s how they work in practice
✈️ Seaplane Transfers
The iconic Maldives journey - a breathtakingly scenic flight skimming low over turquoise atolls.
What to expect:
- Seaplanes operate as scheduled charter flights in daylight only, roughly 6am–4pm.
- Aircraft usually carry around 15 passengers and may make several stops en route.
- To avoid an overnight stay in Malé, your international flight should arrive by early afternoon.
- On arrival, you’ll be met by a resort representative and escorted to the seaplane terminal. Inside, the atmosphere is informal and calm. When your flight is ready, you’ll be called by name and taken directly to the aircraft.
- Waiting times vary depending on schedules and resort stops, but the process is generally smooth and very much part of the Maldives experience.
- Operations are weather dependent and can be affected by conditions on the day.
- Luggage allowances are lower than on international flights and are closely monitored: 20kg checked luggage and 5kg hand luggage.

🛩️ Domestic Flight + Speedboat
Used for more remote atolls and often the only option for resorts beyond seaplane range.
What to expect:
- Greater flexibility with timings compared to seaplanes.
- A resort representative will meet you on arrival, escort you to the domestic terminal, and handle check-in to ensure a smooth connection.
- Waiting times vary depending on your international arrival and the onward domestic flight schedule.
- Luggage allowances are again lower than international flights (typically 20kg checked and 5kg hand luggage).
- The domestic flight may make one or two short touchdown stops before reaching your final airport.
- On landing, you’ll be met once more and transferred by speedboat to your resort.
- If you have a late morning or early afternoon return flight to the UK, this option can mean a very early wake-up call on departure day.

🚤 Speedboat Transfers
Used for resorts closer to Malé and often the most cost-effective option.
What to expect:
- You’ll be escorted by your resort representative straight across the road from the terminal to the jetty.
- Speedboats operate day and night.
- This option is particularly appealing for families travelling with children - after an overnight long-haul flight from the UK, stepping straight onto a boat can make arrival feel much easier.
🏝️ Twin-Centre Holidays: A Note of Caution
For twin-centre stays, it’s important to be aware
that Malé is the main hub, so you’ll often need to return there to connect to
your next resort. This adds time and can increase overall costs.
The main exception is when resorts are within the same hotel group and offer direct
speedboat transfers between islands.
🔄 Mixing It Up
Many resorts offer more than one transfer option. In some cases, it’s possible to arrive by seaplane and depart by speedboat or domestic flight - something I can advise on depending on flight timings and resort location.
