Norway – A Country for All Seasons

Few places on earth change character so beautifully with the seasons as Norway. With the second longest coastline in the world, this is a country of wild natural beauty - dramatic fjords, snow-capped mountains, and Arctic landscapes where nature sets the rhythm of life.

Whether you’re drawn by the Northern Lights, the midnight sun, or the beauty of its epic landscapes, Norway offers something unforgettable at any time of year.

Cultural Cool in Oslo:

Norway’s capital, Oslo, offers a perfect blend of culture, design, and nature. The city’s contemporary architecture - from the MUNCH Museum to the striking Opera House - stands alongside green spaces, fjord views and a thriving culinary scene.

Fjord Adventures from Bergen:

Below the Arctic Circle, Bergen is the perfect base for exploring Norway’s famous fjords. Surrounded by seven mountains, this colourful harbour city is steeped in maritime history and full of character.

From here, you can cruise along the Sognefjord - the longest and deepest in the country - or the stunning Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Many travellers combine this with the Flåm Railway, one of the world’s most scenic train journeys, winding through waterfalls, valleys and mountain passes.

Above the Arctic Circle:

Head north of the Arctic Circle and you’ll find Tromsø, one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. From September to April, the skies often erupt in vivid greens, purples and pinks - a breathtaking natural light show that’s impossible to forget.

In summer, the experience is completely different but just as magical. Between May and July experience the midnight sun when the sun never sets and you can hike under golden light or kayak on mirror-still fjords at midnight.

A short flight or scenic drive away, the Lofoten Islands are another northern gem. Picture jagged mountains rising straight from turquoise waters, red fishing huts perched on stilts, and pristine white-sand beaches that look almost tropical, until you dip a toe in! It’s a photographer’s dream and an adventurer’s paradise, perfect for hiking, kayaking, cycling, or simply slowing down to enjoy village life in Reine, Å and Henningsvær.

Arctic Adventures in Svalbard:

For something truly extraordinary, venture to Svalbard - a remote archipelago halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. This is a place of polar bears, glaciers, and endless ice.

It’s ideal for travellers seeking adventure: snowmobiling, husky sledding, or summer boat safaris past calving glaciers and nesting seabirds. There’s nowhere else quite like it and It’s easily reached by a three-hour flight from Oslo or by a 90 minute flight from Bergen.

Viking Heritage:

Norway’s Viking history is woven into the fabric of the country. While the famous Viking Ship Museum in Oslo is currently closed for renovation until 2027, visitors can still explore Norway’s Viking legacy at the Viking Planet in Oslo - an interactive digital museum that brings the era to life with VR experiences, films and exhibitions.

For those travelling further west, the Viking Village in Gudvangen (near the Nærøyfjord) offers an immersive glimpse into Viking life, complete with reconstructed longhouses, traditional crafts, and costumed guides who share stories of Norway’s past.

Wildlife and Outdoor Wonders:

Norway’s wildlife experiences are as diverse as its landscapes. In winter, whale watching in Tromsø or Andenes offers the chance to see orcas and humpbacks feeding in icy waters. In summer, sea eagles soar over fjords, and reindeer roam the tundra in the north.

Outdoor enthusiasts can hike from late May to September, with iconic trails like Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) or Trolltunga rewarding you with some of the most photographed views in the world. From December to April, ski lovers can head to Hemsedal, Trysil or Geilo for world-class slopes and guaranteed snow.

Cruising the Norwegian Coastline:

For a slower, scenic way to take it all in, consider a Norwegian coastal cruise. You can sail from Bergen to Kirkenes, passing spectacular fjords, fishing villages and Arctic towns - with optional excursions for dog sledding, Northern Lights hunting, and even snow hotels.

Modern expedition ships and traditional Hurtigruten coastal voyages both offer comfortable ways to explore this incredible coastline.

Easier Than Ever to Visit:

Norway is now easier than ever to visit from the UK, with direct flights to Oslo, Bergen and Tromsø - plus frequent domestic connections linking the major cities and regions.

When to Go

• Winter (November–March): Northern Lights, skiing, and Arctic wildlife • Spring & Summer (May–August): Midnight sun, hiking, fjord cruises, festivals • Autumn (September–October): Fewer crowds, rich colours, and still a chance to see the Aurora
