Sri Lanka’s Best Beaches: Where to Go, When to Visit, and Where to Stay
Sri Lanka is often combined with the Maldives, and while the Maldives is rightly famous for its beaches, Sri Lanka has some excellent beaches of its own. What makes Sri Lanka particularly special is the variety it offers. In one itinerary you can combine wildlife safaris, tea country, culture, whale watching, snorkelling and beautiful beaches.
Sri Lanka has a remarkable variety of beaches, from lively surf towns and turtle-filled bays to long, quiet stretches of sand and luxury boutique resorts. Some of the best beaches in Sri Lanka can be found along the south coast around Mirissa, Weligama and Tangalle, while the east coast near Trincomalee and Passikudah offers crystal-clear water and fewer crowds. Other areas, such as Kalpitiya on the north-west coast and Bentota closer to Colombo, offer different experiences again. Choosing the right beach largely depends on when you visit and what kind of beach experience you’re looking for.
The key to enjoying Sri Lanka’s beaches is understanding which coast to visit and when. The island has two monsoon seasons, which means there is always a beautiful stretch of coastline in season.
In simple terms:
- South and west coast beaches are best from December to April
- East coast beaches are best from May to September
With the right itinerary, Sri Lanka offers some truly rewarding beach experiences. Here are some of my favourite beach areas, along with who they suit best, when to visit, and recommended places to stay.
South Coast Beaches (Best December – April)
The south coast is the classic Sri Lankan beach destination, with palm-fringed beaches, boutique hotels and easy access to historic Galle Fort.
