Girls' Getaway to Galway!

Clare De Souza on 05 Dec 2025

Galway is a city that shines in all weather - even the rain! The friendly locals, heartwarming pubs, and coastal walks made it an unforgettable weekend. I've returned home feeling full of festive spirit as the Christmas markets, twinkling lights and the warmth of catching up with friends ensured that our girls’ getaway was everything we had hoped for.

A City That Oozes Irish Charm

After an unforgettable girls’ getaway to Dublin a few years ago, I wondered if Galway could possibly live up to such high expectations? I’ll admit, as our taxi drove through the pouring rain and pitch darkness towards the city, I wondered if Galway could charm us quite as much. But from the very first glimpse of twinkling lights, it was clear that Galway is a city that oozes Irish charm at every turn.

Pubs Full of Heart: Music, Guinness & Nooks

Once we had ditched our luggage, we wasted no time in sampling some of Galway’s cosy pubs (well, it would be rude not to, right?!).  Galway’s pubs are legendary, and each one is a warren of nooks, crannies, and hidden snugs, alive with the sound of laughter and live Irish music. Seán Ua Neachtain’s soon became our favourite, and I can fully understand why it is a beloved Galway institution.  It is steeped in history, bustling with friendly locals and offers the perfect pint of Guinness (so my friends tell me as I prefer a G&T!).

                                                                                                                                                                               A Wild Walk to Salthill

In true Irish spirit, we embraced the elements the next morning and took a windswept walk out to Salthill. The salty Atlantic air did wonders for our heads and laughter echoed down the promenade as the wind whipped around us.  Even in winter, the sea was glistening as the sun made brief appearances beneath the dramatic skies, highlighting the beautiful coastline.

                                                                                                                                                         Christmas Shopping & Seasonal Treats

Feeling invigorated after our coastal walk, we stopped at The Hardiman Hotel on Eyre Square for a well-deserved Bailey’s hot chocolate to warm us up.  We then dove straight into the Christmas markets in the square, the perfect place for seasonal shopping and festive feels. As well as the usual Christmas fayre, handmade ornaments, artisan chocolates, and unique Irish gifts filled our bags. Nearby, Galway’s independent boutiques gave us even more reasons to linger and tick off our Christmas gift lists.

Cava Bodega: A Taste of Spain & A Touch of History

For dinner, Cava Bodega was just as enjoyable as the reviews had promised. Beyond the lively atmosphere and outstanding tapas, this spot is a heartfelt nod to Galway’s Spanish connections. Centuries ago, Spanish sailors landed in Galway, leaving behind flavours and friendships that live on to this day. We shared small plates inspired by both Spain and Ireland and raised a glass (or two) to great times.

                                                                                                                                                                          The Perfect Winter Break

The rain may have greeted us, but Galway won our hearts. If you are looking for a winter break to lift your spirits, Galway is the perfect choice. However, I work closely with my clients to design bespoke itineraries that match their needs and preferences so if Galway isn't what you're looking for, we can discover somewhere that is the perfect match.
