Oceania Marina Docked in Cobh

Oceania Cruises; small ship luxury, big experiences

Coleen Matovu on 17 Aug 2025

Cruise holidays have never been more popular, and with so many ships to choose from it can feel a little overwhelming. If you are drawn to a more intimate, grown up experience with exceptional food and warm, understated luxury, Oceania Cruises are a brilliant place to start.

I recently sailed on Oceania Marina on an adult‑only UK & Ireland itinerary, with a stop in France, and it reminded me exactly why this small luxury ship has such loyal fans.

Why Oceania Marina?

Oceania Marina carries around 1,250 guests, so it feels like a refined boutique hotel at sea rather than a floating resort. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and quietly elegant. You never feel “on show” or overwhelmed by crowds, yet everything still feels high quality and beautifully looked after.

For clients who want:

  • A smaller ship that can slip into more interesting ports
  • Attentive service without formality
  • A strong focus on food and relaxed luxury

Oceania Marina is a superb fit.

A seamless UK & Ireland itinerary

I joined the ship in Belfast for a cruise that called at:

  • Isle of Man
  • Cobh
  • Portland
  • St Malo

before finishing in Southampton.

Sailing in or out of Belfast is a particular treat. It is extremely convenient for clients in Northern Ireland, and when the weather plays ball the views back over the city and along the Lough are beautiful. Because Marina is a smaller vessel, she can access ports that the mega‑ships simply cannot, which makes for easier days ashore and a more authentic feel.

Port days that feel effortless

One of the standout days for me was Cobh. Disembarkation was as simple as walking off the ship, and within 5 minutes we were in the heart of town. We wandered the pretty streets, then settled into Kelly’s Bar for a perfectly poured pint of the black stuff in the sunshine before strolling back on board.

The itinerary included a mix of:

  • Tender ports: where the ship anchors offshore and you take a tender boat in and out. The crew handled this brilliantly, helping everyone on and off and keeping everything running smoothly.
  • Docked ports with shuttles: where shuttle buses ran back and forth to town.

We chose not to book excursions on this cruise. We simply wanted to explore the towns, and thanks to the smaller‑ship access and convenient docking, our port days were effortless. Step off, explore, and step back on again: exactly how an easy holiday should feel.

What is included with Oceania Cruises?

Oceania Cruises include a lot as standard in every fare, which adds real value to a premium cruise. As standard you will find:

  • Gourmet speciality restaurants
  • Sodas, speciality coffees and teas
  • Shipboard gratuities
  • Still and sparkling Vero Water®
  • Unlimited WiFi with Starlink® connectivity
  • Laundry services

This creates a naturally indulgent feel from the moment you step on board.

Life on board: laid‑back luxury

Life on board is wonderfully relaxed. You can genuinely make yourself at home:

  • Curl up with a book in the library
  • Unwind on the sun deck with a drink
  • Work out or enjoy wellness time in the gym and spa

The crew are a huge part of what makes Marina special. They are incredibly attentive in a very natural way. One afternoon on the sun deck it was bright but chilly. Without any fuss, the staff began offering blankets to anyone who wanted one. Sitting in the fresh air, wrapped up in a cosy blanket with a hot drink, looking out to sea felt like such a simple but luxurious pleasure.

With around 800 crew for 1,250 guests at capacity, you really feel the difference in service levels. From restaurant and bar teams to housekeeping and reception, everyone I encountered was genuinely helpful without ever being over the top.

Dining: where Oceania really shines

Dining is, quite simply, the star of the show on Oceania Marina. For food‑lovers, this is a dream.

Speciality dining is included as standard, which is a real point of difference. During my sailing I enjoyed:

  • Jacques: A French restaurant that set the tone for the entire cruise on our first night. Beautifully presented, rich, classic flavours.
  • The Grand Dining Room: Refined, elegant and consistently excellent.
  • The Polo Grill: A superb option for those who love a quality steakhouse feel.
  • Toscana: Authentic Italian dishes with a lovely, leisurely atmosphere.
  • Red Ginger: My personal highlight. As an Asian food fan, I was in heaven here. Even choosing your chopsticks is an experience, with options from beginner to experienced level.

To enjoy this range of speciality restaurants at no extra cost truly adds to the sense of indulgence.

Daytime dining is just as good. Aquamar Kitchen quickly became a favourite, especially the “Build Your Own Bowl” concept. Fresh, healthy ingredients prepared exactly to your liking feels more like a stylish city café than a ship buffet.

Evenings: from string quartets to karaoke

Evening entertainment on Oceania Marina is varied but never over the top. You can tailor your nights to your mood:

  • Musical shows in the theatre
  • Elegant pre‑dinner string quartets
  • Live singers
  • Karaoke evenings in Horizons Bar

It is the kind of ship where you can enjoy a proper night out if you wish, or simply linger over a multi‑course dinner and a glass of wine.

Who is Oceania Marina perfect for?

Based on my sailing, I would recommend Oceania Marina for:

  • Couples and friends who prefer an adult‑only, smaller‑ship experience
  • Food‑lovers who want genuine culinary excellence included
  • Guests who like attentive but unfussy service
  • Travellers who want to explore ports at an easy pace rather than rush from one big production to the next

We stayed in a balcony cabin and I would always recommend this. There is something incredibly special about starting the day with a cup of tea on your balcony, watching seabirds wheel above the waves or quietly observing life in port as the ship docks.

Whatever you are looking for from your next cruise, there will be a ship that suits you. If you are drawn to relaxed luxury, exceptional dining and smaller‑ship charm, Oceania Marina deserves a place very near the top of your list.
