Daryl Glean on 26 Apr 2025

There is something incredibly special about a first trip to Walt Disney World. From the moment you see your first pair of Mickey ears at the airport to that first glimpse of Cinderella Castle, it feels like stepping into a storybook. This first-time Disney adventure was designed to balance excitement, comfort and flexibility, and it worked beautifully. The trip included: Flights with United Airlines via Chicago outbound and Houston inbound United Club lounge access at London Heathrow Car hire for the full duration 7 nights at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter from 26 April 2025 1 night at Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort on 3 May 2025 A 14‑day Disney park ticket, including all four theme parks and the water parks A full‑day visit to Kennedy Space Center on 30 April 2025 The Disney Dining Plan, with standout meals at Chef Mickey’s, ‘Ohana, The Polite Pig, D‑Luxe Burger, Yak & Yeti and many others With special thanks to Claire Webb at United Airlines for arranging the flights and Heathrow lounge access, and to Philip Britton at Kennedy Space Center for arranging the tickets for an unforgettable day among real rockets and space history.

OrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoOrlandoThe magic started at London Heathrow, thanks to access to the United Club:

  • A quieter, more comfortable space away from the busy terminal
  • Complimentary drinks and snacks to enjoy before boarding
  • Time to relax and get into holiday mode before a long‑haul flight

Flying with United Airlines via Chicago on the way out and Houston on the way back meant:

  • Well-timed connections through major US hubs
  • The reassurance of flying with a large, established transatlantic airline
  • A smoother experience overall, especially important for a first big family trip

On arrival in Orlando, collecting a hire car for the duration added invaluable flexibility: easy trips between the airport, Disney resorts, restaurants, shopping outlets and the Kennedy Space Center. It meant the holiday could be both fully Disney and a little bit “Florida”, all in one.

First Disney Home: Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter

From 26 April 2025, the main base was Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, one of Walt Disney World’s most charming and compact moderate resorts.

Why French Quarter Is Perfect For A First Visit

French Quarter feels like a hidden gem on Disney property:

  • Inspired by New Orleans’ historic French Quarter, with cobbled-style paths, wrought‑iron balconies and pastel façades
  • small, easy‑to‑navigate layout, which is especially helpful for first-timers and families
  • A relaxed, almost boutique feel compared with some of the larger resorts

Highlights of staying here include:

  • A colourful, Mardi Gras‑inspired pool area with fun theming
  • Famous beignets at the resort’s food court – a must‑try treat on any stay
  • Peaceful riverside walks along the Sassagoula River
  • Access to boat transportation to Disney Springs, turning evenings out for dinner and shopping into a scenic cruise

Over seven nights, Port Orleans – French Quarter quickly feels like home: you learn the shortcuts, find your favourite quiet courtyard and start to look forward to that walk back along the river after a long park day.

14‑Day Disney Park Ticket: Freedom To Enjoy It All

To make the most of a first visit, a 14‑day Disney park ticket was included, giving access to:

  • All four main theme parks:
    • Magic Kingdom
    • EPCOT
    • Disney’s Hollywood Studios
    • Disney’s Animal Kingdom
  • The Disney water parks, ideal for a slower, splash-filled day between big park days

For a first-timer, this kind of ticket is transformational:

  • You are not rushing to cram everything into a few days.
  • You can revisit favourite parks, hop between them and fit in evening visits just for fireworks or dinner.
  • You can build in “lighter” days at the water parks, which keep the magic going while giving everyone a break from long queues and walking.

It brings a welcome sense of freedom: if you miss something one day, you can simply come back.

Disney Dining Plan: Eating Around The World (And The Parks)

Being on the Disney Dining Plan turned mealtimes into highlights in their own right. With food and snacks included, it was easy to embrace some of Disney’s best dining experiences.

Dining Highlights

Chef Mickey’s

  • Iconic character dining at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
  • Meet Mickey, Minnie and friends in their chef outfits at your table
  • The perfect “this is really happening” moment for a first Disney trip

‘Ohana

  • Much‑loved restaurant at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
  • Family‑style feast with grilled meats, noodles, dumplings and that famous bread pudding
  • Warm, friendly and full of atmosphere, often with a glimpse or sound of evening fireworks nearby

The Polite Pig (Disney Springs)

  • A modern barbecue favourite with a focus on quality smoked meats and great sides
  • A brilliant choice for a relaxed but flavour‑packed lunch or dinner during a Disney Springs visit

D‑Luxe Burger (Disney Springs)

  • Gourmet burgers and indulgent shakes in a smart quick‑service setting
  • Ideal for a hearty, fuss‑free meal in between shopping or before heading back to the resort

Yak & Yeti (Disney’s Animal Kingdom)

  • Asian‑inspired dishes served in a richly themed, sit‑down restaurant
  • A well‑timed mid‑day break from the heat and walking at Animal Kingdom, with generous portions and bold flavours

Alongside these, the dining plan gave the freedom to try many other restaurants and snacks across the parks and resorts: Mickey-shaped treats, breakfast classics, themed desserts and more. Food became part of the story, not just a necessity.

A Day With The Rockets: Kennedy Space Center – 30 April 2025

On 30 April 2025, the focus shifted from fairy tales to space exploration with a full‑day visit to the Kennedy Space Center.

With tickets kindly arranged by Philip Britton, it was a seamless, inspiring day out:

  • Walking beneath enormous rockets from the early days of the space race
  • Seeing the Space Shuttle Atlantis up close and learning about its missions
  • Exploring interactive exhibits that bring NASA’s history and future plans to life

Driving there in the hire car made it an easy day trip from Orlando, and it added a different kind of magic to the holiday:

  • Real‑life science, engineering and human courage
  • A sense of awe that complements the fantasy of Disney in a completely different way

Returning to French Quarter that evening, there was something very special about ending the day with a peaceful riverfront stroll after standing in the shadow of Saturn V rockets just hours before.

The Grand Finale: Disney’s All‑Star Movies Resort – 3 May 2025

For the final night, 3 May 2025, the stay moved to Disney’s All‑Star Movies Resort in the Walt Disney World Resort.

This value resort is pure Disney joy:

  • Huge, larger‑than‑life statues of beloved Disney characters and film icons
  • Pools themed around classic movies and plenty of fun photo spots
  • A bright, energetic atmosphere that feels like a celebration of Disney itself

After a week of French Quarter charm and riverside calm, All‑Star Movies provided a big, bold Disney finale. It was the perfect place for one last dip in the pool, one more Mickey-shaped snack and a final stroll past giant movie props before heading home.
