Marrakesh: Medina Magic & Rooftop Moments
Step into the heart of Marrakesh, where vibrant streets buzz with energy, ancient alleys hide centuries of stories, and every rooftop reveals a new perspective on this captivating city. From captivating chaos outside the airport to serene moments in hidden riads, my adventure in the Red City was a feast for the senses at every turn. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning for more, Marrakesh promises surprises, colour, and inspiration from dawn to dusk. Here’s a glimpse into my recent journey exploring its magic…
Arrival: Where the Mayhem Becomes Magic
Nothing prepares you for the first burst of Marrakesh energy as you step outside the airport. The traffic is captivating chaos: motorcycles weaving through a tangle of cars, entire families bundled onto a single bike (the driver the sole helmet-wearer). It looks impossible, but somehow, it all just works.
Arrival at the ochre walls of the old city signals the start of an adventure. The roads soon narrow and the city’s rhythm slows as you draw closer to the medina’s heart. Our hotel wasn’t directly accessible by car, like so many charming riads here, so we strolled the final few minutes through winding lanes—easily navigated by phone, but with a thoughtful staff member sent to meet us, just in case.
Inside, a warm Moroccan welcome awaited: cool water, homemade biscuits and friendly faces as we checked in. The restaurant was buzzing, our room a sanctuary of traditional décor and local charm.
Rooftop Dining & First Tastes
That first evening, we set out for Kafe Merstan, a welcoming rooftop restaurant just five minutes’ walk away. The views across the city rooftops set the scene for delicious local food—great value and a perfect introduction to Marrakesh dining.
Guided Wanderings & Hidden Gems
A guided walk is a wonderful way to unlock the city. Our knowledgeable guide led us through a labyrinth of alleys, with every turn revealing vibrant spices, dazzling mosaics, and skilled artisans shaping their wares.
Bahia Palace was a highlight. Though still being lovingly restored after the earthquake, its opulent courtyards and intricate workmanship are truly breathtaking. We paused above the gardens at a terrace bar to admire the scene.
Wandering back through the atmospheric streets to the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa square, we couldn’t resist pausing for a snake-charmer’s spectacle—Marrakesh tradition in full swing!
A peaceful half-hour in Cyber Park offered respite before a magical evening at La Maison Arabe. Lanterns glowed across the rooftop terrace and the welcome was unforgettable. Our waiter was the perfect host: warm, witty and attentive. Moroccan and Asian dishes starred on the menu—think spring rolls, briouates, lamb and vegetarian couscous, with a vibrant local rosé and the signature Ali Baba cocktail. When one of us felt under the weather, their extra kindness—a fresh lemon, ginger and honey tea—made all the difference.
Garden Hopes & Souk Adventures
A morning wander took us to the Majorelle Gardens and Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Top tip: always pre-book, as these iconic spots are incredibly popular. Missing out, we regrouped with a sweet mint tea at La Bonne Adresse and set off to explore the labyrinthine souks near the riad. The colours, scents and tradition of haggling created a sensory feast.
Lunch atop Bigua Café’s rooftop was the perfect way to watch medina life unfold below.
One Last Glance
On our final morning, we wandered the old town’s secret alleys, soaking up the city’s atmosphere and collecting a few final treasures in the souks before heading for home—hearts fuller, spirits lighter.
