Seychelles island coastline with granite rocks and Indian Ocean

Beyond the Romance - A Seychelles Travel Story

Island-hopping in the Seychelles and slow travel itineraries

The Seychelles travel experience conjures up images of romance and seclusion. But what if I told you it’s a perfect destination for families and adventure seekers too, as this balmy destination hides a dynamic secret most people miss...

The iconic archipelago that makes up the Seychelles, is full of contrasts and experiences which will captivate and forever linger in your memory.

We’ll begin our story in a boat… Imagine the beautiful Indian Ocean stretching calmly out to the horizon in front of you, and yet teeming with life below the surface. Where turtles rise briefly for air, rays ripple over sandbanks and shoals of fish scatter like confetti... as slowly a darker shape appears. Deliberate & steady a whale shark emerges from the depths & glides past. Everyone falls silent; encounters that aren't staged, but spontaneous, shared by guides who understand that privilege lies in watching without disturbing. Slipping into the warm water with a mask the world instantly changes; as mesmerising as it is quiet, where the only thing you hear is your breath. The view from above in a clear paddle boat is no less breathtaking, exploring granite coves and secret beaches.

More than 100 islands are scattered over 1200km of the Indian Ocean, ranging from large granite islands to uninhabited tiny coral atolls, so life above and below the waves is a way of life, but the Seychelles holds other secretes... Which is why I would never suggest you stay in one place.

Granite boulders which seem decorative from the sea turn into impressive sculptures rising from the azure shallows, eye catching against a backdrop of endless white sand. Trails that lead from shore to rainforest with giant palm leaves and roots that coil across paths, shifts the landscape in moments. Whether you zipwire through or walk underneath these towering palms, the forest light becomes other worldly.  Mangrove forests and the famous Coco de Mer, native only to the Seychelles, and which grows the world’s largest seed, scatters fallen shells like relics on the forest floor. A land where ancient giant tortoises graze lazily on fallen fruit whilst tiny sea turtle hatchlings emerge from the sand for the first time, scurrying into the waves for safety. Immersed in this unique backdrop, it feels like you're moving through a natural history museum, yet nothing is behind glass.

Weathered plantation houses still stand on the larger islands of Mahé and La Digue hinting at an older Seychelles, when the rhythm of life followed spices and trade winds. The narrow streets of Victoria reveal temples tucked between shops and glimpses of bright sarongs can be seen catching the market breeze, locals keen to share their heritage and culture.

As night falls, far away from the glare of manufactured light sources, the sky turns inky, filled with stars so bright they look almost close enough to touch. Beneath your feet, the whisper of waves almost conceals a crab scuttling home across the sand, and the air carries the faint scent of charcoal and spice from a nearby grill. Somewhere behind you, pots clink in a small Creole kitchen.  Red snapper & Kingfish sizzle, and the warmth of curry, coconut and chilli drifts out into the dark. A world where all your senses come alive.

Your Seychelles, your story

So, whilst the Seychelles will always be a byword for romance, beyond the postcard views lies a living, breathing archipelago with a quietly adventurous side for those who like their days soft around the edges but full of small, magical moments. The beauty of this iconic archipelago is that it takes very little to feel somewhere completely different; and knowing what to pull into to a perfect island-hopping Seychelles itinerary is where that magic happens.

If this sounds like your kind of holiday story, I'm here to create it with you, for you: the right mix of islands, time and experiences so that, when it's time you leave, it feels less like a holiday and more like a chapter  you lived, one small adventure at a time.  Beyond the postcard.
