Sri Lanka Trip 2025
Sri Lanka
Familiarisation trip with our local in resort destination team, taking in everything the country has to offer.
My Sri Lankan Journey: Culture, Coastlines & Quiet Moments
There are some places that do more than simply impress you, they gently change you. For me, Sri Lanka is one of those rare destinations.
After a direct flight with SriLankan Airlines, I landed at Colombo International Airport to a soft wall of warmth and that familiar buzz of a new adventure. Waiting outside was our trusted local partner, Authenticities Sri Lanka, who took care of every detail on the ground and helped shape the trip into a seamless, soulful journey.
From that first drive out of the airport, Sri Lanka unfolded like a story: golden beaches, ancient cities, misty tea hills, wild national parks and quiet moments that stayed with me long after I returned home.
Negombo: Easing Into Island Time
Just a short drive from the airport, Negombo was the perfect place to land gently in Sri Lanka.
Wide sandy beaches, swaying palms and a relaxed, slightly bohemian atmosphere set the tone. Beach bars hum into the evening, seafood restaurants fill the air with the scent of grilled fish and spices, and the ocean rolls in with a calm, unhurried rhythm.
An interactive arrack experience introduced us to Sri Lanka’s local spirit. It is strong, characterful and unmistakably Sri Lankan, much like the island itself.
A couple of nights in Negombo is ideal for:
- Recovering from the long flight
- Adjusting to the time difference and tropical heat
- Slipping effortlessly into “island time” before heading inland
The Cultural Triangle: Sri Lanka’s Ancient Soul
From Negombo, we travelled north into the Cultural Triangle, where Sri Lanka’s ancient heart really comes alive. Think emerald landscapes, scattered ruins, temples and stories carved into stone.
Minneriya National Park
One of the standout experiences was a private jeep safari in Minneriya National Park. Out on the open grasslands, elephants wandered just metres from us: family groups interacting gently, solitary males grazing in the late-afternoon light and herds slowly crossing the plains.
Seeing these gentle giants roaming freely in their natural habitat is moving and humbling. For elephant encounters, Minneriya is a very special place.
Sigiriya: The Lion Rock
No visit to the Cultural Triangle is complete without Sigiriya, the iconic rock fortress that rises dramatically from the forest.
The climb is demanding but broken into manageable sections, with plenty of places to stop and take in the views. Along the way you pass:
- Delicate ancient frescoes
- Remnants of palace walls perched high above the landscape
- Beautiful water and boulder gardens at the base
The views from the top are spectacular, with jungle stretching to the horizon. My top tip: start early, before the heat and the crowds, while the rock still feels quiet and contemplative.
Kandy & The Temple of the Tooth
From the Cultural Triangle, we drifted south to Kandy, a city wrapped around a tranquil lake and steeped in spirituality.
Kandy is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most important Buddhist sites in the world. Inside, the gentle rhythm of drumming, the scent of incense and the flow of local worshippers create an atmosphere of deep calm and devotion.
Evenings were spent walking around the lake, watching life unfold along the shore, and joining a local cooking class that introduced us to the spices and flavours at the heart of Sri Lankan cuisine. It was here that I felt myself really slowing down and noticing more.
The Train to Tea Country
Next came one of the most iconic journeys in Sri Lanka: the train ride from Kandy into the heart of tea country.
Over five and a half hours, the landscape constantly shifted:
- Jungle gave way to cool mountain air
- Waterfalls tumbled down steep slopes
- Hillsides were blanketed in immaculate tea plantations
- Locals waved as we rattled past little stations and villages
This is the journey behind those famous “leaning out of the train door” photographs, and yes, the views really are that beautiful.
We stayed among the plantations in charming bungalows scattered across the hills. Misty mornings, birdsong and the gentle rhythm of tea pickers at work created the most peaceful backdrop. A sunrise visit to Lipton’s Seat, reached by hike or tuk-tuk, rewarded us with sweeping views over layer upon layer of emerald hills.
Ella & The Nine Arches Bridge
Ella brought a different kind of energy: a laid-back town with backpacker vibes, cafés, bars and plenty of hiking trails, all surrounded by mountains and tea fields.
A must-see here is the famous Nine Arches Bridge, hidden in a lush valley. Waiting for the train to cross is part of the charm, especially as Sri Lankan trains run on very relaxed “island time”. When it finally appears and curves over the arches, the scene is every bit as magical as the photos suggest.
Yala National Park: Wildlife & Glamping
From the hills, we descended towards the southeast and Yala National Park, known for its leopards, elephants and rich birdlife.
We stayed at Tribe Yala Glamping, where stylish pods and private plunge pools are tucked into the natural surroundings. It felt like luxury in the wild: falling asleep to the sounds of the bush, then waking before dawn for our game drives.
Yala can be busy, so a great guide makes all the difference. With expert help, we explored quieter areas, learned about conservation and tracked wildlife with patience. The magic lies in those quiet moments: a rustle in the bushes, a pawprint in the dust, a fleeting glimpse of a leopard melting back into the undergrowth.
Galle: History, Fort Walls & Ocean Views
Our final stop was Galle, a coastal city enclosed within atmospheric Dutch fort walls.
Inside, cobbled streets are lined with colonial-era buildings, independent boutiques, art-filled cafés and charming guesthouses. With a local guide, Galle’s history truly comes alive, from its Dutch and British past to the impact of the 2004 tsunami and the resilience of the community.
Strolling along the ramparts at sunset, with the Indian Ocean on one side and the fort’s rooftops on the other, felt like the perfect way to end the journey. And as a cricket fan, visiting the famous Galle cricket ground was a small personal highlight.
Why Sri Lanka Stays With You
From Galle, we returned to the airport sun-kissed, slightly reluctant to leave and carrying a suitcase full of memories.
Sri Lanka offers an extraordinary mix in one trip:
- Beaches and relaxed coastal towns
- Ancient temples and sacred cities
- Tea-covered hills and cool mountain air
- National parks alive with elephants, leopards and birdlife
- A warm, welcoming culture that stays with you
With the support of Authenticities Sri Lanka and thoughtful planning, the whole journey flowed effortlessly, leaving space to simply be present and enjoy.
