When Is the Best Time to Book Your Holiday?

Emily Flynn on 26 Feb 2026

Timing can make a big difference to both price and choice when it comes to your next escape. Book too late and you risk limited availability, especially in school holidays. Book too early and you might miss tactical offers or airline sales. Here is a simple guide to optimum booking periods for different types of trip, to help you plan ahead with confidence.

Long‑haul holidays & flights

Think: Caribbean, USA, Canada, Indian Ocean, Asia, Australia, Africa

  • Flights are typically released around 11–12 months in advance.
  • For peak dates (Christmas, Easter, school summer holidays) it is wise to start looking as soon as seats are released.
  • For non‑peak dates, a good window is 6–9 months before travel. This usually gives a balance of choice on routes, flight times and cabin, plus access to early booking offers.
  • Premium cabins and family rooms/suites often sell out first, so if you want extra space or specific room types, earlier is better.

Short‑haul beach breaks

Think: Mediterranean, Canary Islands, Balearics, Portugal, Greek Islands

  • Popular summer resorts can fill quickly, especially for school holiday weeks.
  • For the best choice of hotels, flight times and durations, aim to book 6–9 months before departure.
  • Outside of school holidays you can sometimes leave it a little later, but 3–4 months in advance is usually a sensible minimum if you have specific dates or a particular hotel in mind.

City breaks in Europe

Think: Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Prague

  • For quieter periods, you can sometimes be flexible, but for weekends, bank holidays and events, availability tightens quickly.
  • A good rule of thumb is 2–4 months ahead for European cities, and 4–6 months if you are fixed to a particular weekend or travelling as a group.
  • Christmas markets, New Year and Easter should be treated more like peak‑season holidays: book as early as you can.

Family & school holiday travel

  • School holidays are the highest demand periods of the year.
  • For summer, Christmas and Easter, start planning 9–12 months in advance if possible.
  • Larger family rooms, villas and interconnecting rooms are limited and are often reserved first, so early planning is key if you need space for children or multi‑generational travel.

Tailor‑made tours & multi‑centre trips

Think: safaris, self‑drive itineraries, island‑hopping, touring holidays

  • These trips often rely on small, boutique properties, limited‑capacity tours or specialist guides.
  • For complex or bespoke itineraries, 9–12 months in advance is ideal, especially if you want specific lodges, room categories or must‑do experiences.
  • For quieter seasons or more flexible travellers, 6–9 months can work, but the more moving parts a trip has, the earlier it is worth starting.

Last‑minute deals: are they worth waiting for?

Last‑minute offers can still exist, particularly outside peak dates, but they usually work best for those who are flexible on destination, dates and flight times. If you:

  • Need school holiday dates
  • Want specific flight times or a particular hotel
  • Are travelling in a group or with young children

then waiting for a bargain can end up costing more in terms of compromise and stress.
