Anna's Lapland Guide
Here’s my quick guide for families planning this magical once-in-a-lifetime trip.
FULL PACKAGE = PEACE OF MIND
My top tip? Book a full package rather than piecing everything together yourself.
With flights, transfers, accommodation, meals and activities included, plus a team in resort to help everything run smoothly whatever the weather, you can simply relax and enjoy the magic with your family.
I see people suggesting online that DIY trips are a cheap and easy option. Not necessarily!
If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you want to be financially protected and well looked after, rather than potentially missing activities you’ve booked separately.
I’m also certain most families don’t want to be worrying about driving in heavy snow, in unfamiliar remote surroundings, in the dark, when they arrive. Nor necessarily head to the closest, most commercial Santa experience because there happens to be a cheap local bus from the airport.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Let’s do it right.
TRUSTED OPERATORS
I work with a number of Lapland providers and most often recommend Canterbury Travel, Santa’s Lapland, Inghams Lapland, Not In The Guide Books and Transun.
I compare the options across providers to find the right fit for your family and, because I have price parity with these suppliers through Travel Counsellors, you won’t pay anything extra for my service.
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
As well as travel and accommodation, the packages I recommend typically include thermal clothing and boot hire, popular Arctic activities such as reindeer and husky sleigh rides and, of course, a visit to Santa.
For dining, half or full board are my top recommendations. Coming back to a hot meal after a day in the snow is priceless!
LOCATION & TIMING
Lapland is huge, so if you’re travelling early in the season, heading further north can help maximise your chances of good snowfall.
Some destinations are busier ski resorts with more facilities, whilst other locations offer a much more remote Arctic wilderness experience.
The right choice really depends on your family. I can help you work out which is the right fit.
COSTS & LONGER STAYS
Let’s be honest, Lapland is a high-ticket destination.
Day trips from the UK can be arranged from around £600pp, with Santa, reindeer, husky and snowmobile experiences typically included as shorter taster sessions.
3 or 4-night packages typically start at around £6,000 for a family of four.
However, a 7-night stay can sometimes be only slightly more expensive and gives you more time to enjoy the snow and everything Lapland has to offer.
If you want to travel during the peak week before Christmas, to avoid taking children out of school, expect to pay a significant premium.
BEYOND DECEMBER
New Year and February half term can also work beautifully, particularly for families with older children if your focus is less about Santa and more about the Arctic experience.
Snow conditions are often at their most reliable around these times too.
BOOK AHEAD
If you can plan 12 months or so ahead, we’ll have so many more options available.
