Travelling Dairy Free for the First Time

Dairy free & delicious

Food is such a huge part of travel for me. When I’m travelling without Connor, it’s often the time I really enjoy exploring different dining experiences, as I’m not limited to familiar or “safe” choices. So, after discovering I have a dairy intolerance, I was curious to see how my first trip dairy free would work in reality.

Would the choice feel limited? Would dining become complicated? Would I constantly need to ask for adaptations?

As it turned out, I had absolutely nothing to worry about.

My Experience Across Four River Cruise Ships

During a recent river cruise conference, I spent four nights across four different river cruise ships: Riviera Geoffrey Chaucer, Viva Enjoy, Avalon View and Riverside Debussy.

Every single one impressed me when it came to catering for dietary requirements.

Dining with a Dairy Intolerance on a River Cruise

What stood out most was how effortless the experience felt.

I was not restricted to a separate “special diet” menu, and I was never made to feel awkward for mentioning a dietary requirement. Instead, the dining teams adapted dishes where needed, clearly explained options, and ensured I could enjoy the same dining experience as everyone else onboard.

And that made such a difference.

Was There Enough Choice for Dairy-Free Guests?

When you first start travelling with a food intolerance, there is often uncertainty about whether you will feel limited. But throughout the trip, I never felt like I was missing out.

The choice was far better than expected. I enjoyed beautifully presented meals, desserts I could actually eat, and food that still felt indulgent rather than restrictive. In many cases, the dairy-free options were so good I would happily choose them again.

Why River Cruising Works Well for Dietary Requirements

River cruising deserves more recognition when it comes to dietary requirements and food allergies.

People often assume smaller ships mean less flexibility, but my experience was the opposite. The service felt personal, attentive, and genuinely thoughtful — ideal when travelling with a food intolerance or allergy.

Final Thoughts: My Dairy-Free River Cruise Experience

By the end of the trip, being dairy free simply felt like part of the experience rather than something I had to think about.

So, if you are wondering whether a dairy-free river cruise works well, my experience is a clear yes.

Not only did I eat well, I felt completely included in every part of the journey — exactly how travel should feel.
