A Solo Adventurer's Christmas in Tenerife

Steve Garside on 23 December 2021
The allure of spending Christmas in a place where sun-kissed beaches meet rugged volcanic landscapes led me to Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. As a solo traveller, with constant itchy feet, I yearned for an adventure that would combine the joy of the festive season with the thrill of exploration. Little did I know that this magical island in the North Atlantic Ocean would captivate my heart, with its remarkable destinations like La Orotava, Santa Cruz, the Masca region, and more. Forget the tourist-driven south of the island, welcome to Tenerife North.

Puerto de la Cruz.

Nestled between the majestic Atlantic Ocean and the towering Teide volcano, Puerto de la Cruz offers some of the most stunning and diverse landscapes on the island. To the north, the town's coastline boasts beautiful beaches, including Playa Jardín, which is known for its unique black sand. The crashing waves create a mesmerizing backdrop, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. It was rather sleepy here during Christmas week, but still plenty shops, spas and attractions open during the day time. To the south, the iconic presence of Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak, looms in the distance. Its snow-capped summit provides a striking contrast to the warm, coastal atmosphere of Puerto de la Cruz. The view of Teide from the town is nothing short of awe-inspiring, especially during sunset when the mountain is bathed in a warm, golden glow. Throughout my solo adventure in Tenerife, I stayed at the Atlantic Mirage Suites and Spa in Puerto de la Cruz. The beautiful rooms with generous balconies offered breath-taking views of the North Atlantic Ocean to the north and the majestic Teide volcano to the south. The friendly staff, rooftop Jacuzzis, and delicious food made it a perfect home away from home for Christmas week. The thoughtful touch of little Christmas cards and chocolate gifts from housekeeping on Christmas Eve added a warm and festive touch to my stay.

Santa Cruz: A Lively Christmas Fiesta!

Santa Cruz, the bustling capital of Tenerife, is where tradition seamlessly blends with vibrant festivities during the Christmas season and a must-see hotspot. The city comes alive with a dazzling display of lights, colourful decorations, and an infectious sense of joy. What makes Santa Cruz truly special during this time is its efficient tram system, which allows you to explore the city's vibrant streets and attractions with ease. As you wander through the city's streets, you'll discover an array of museums, charming shops, and delightful eateries. From the exquisite Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, celebrating the natural history of the Canary Islands, to the bustling Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, where you can savour local delicacies, Santa Cruz offers a perfect blend of culture, history, and modernity. One of the unique features of Santa Cruz is its picturesque harbour, where you might be treated to a glimpse of majestic cruise ships anchored in the port. The vibrant city atmosphere is further enhanced by street performances, parades, and open-air concerts. The Plaza de España, a central hub, transforms into a winter wonderland with a massive nativity scene and a towering Christmas tree, creating a captivating backdrop for holiday festivities. Santa Cruz truly encapsulates the spirit of Christmas, where traditions like the "Baile de los Enanos" (Dance of the Dwarves) and the "Cabalgata de Reyes" (Three Wise Men Parade) are celebrated with exuberance. It's a place where you can join in the merriment with the locals, try traditional holiday treats, and immerse yourself in the joyous ambiance that only Santa Cruz can offer. Whether you're exploring the city's historic districts, hopping on the tram to see the sights, or indulging in its culinary delights, Santa Cruz is a captivating destination that beautifully balances the old and the new, making it a must-visit during your Tenerife Christmas adventure.

La Orotava: A Timeless Charm.

Nestled amidst the northern hills of Tenerife, La Orotava is a town that exudes timeless charm. Cobblestone streets lead to picturesque squares adorned with ornate Spanish balconies and centuries-old churches. During the Christmas season, La Orotava transforms into a captivating wonderland, with vibrant lights and festive decorations illuminating every corner. On Christmas Day, I ventured into the heart of the town, guided by the melodious sound of church bells. Inside the magnificent church, I was greeted by the heavenly voices of the congregation singing "Come All Ye Faithful" in Spanish. It was a soul-stirring experience that left me feeling comforted and ready to continue my day of exploration.

The World's Oldest Tree in Icod de los Vinos.

Icod de los Vinos, a town on the northern coast, holds a captivating secret – the world's oldest dragon tree, known as "El Drago." This ancient tree, estimated to be over a thousand years old, stands as a symbol of Tenerife's rich history and natural beauty. Strolling through the town's charming and colorful streets, I felt like I had stepped into a fairy tale.

Culinary Delight at El Burgado.

In the small fishing village near Playa Las Mujeres, I stumbled upon a hidden gem - El Burgado, a fish restaurant that left my taste buds dancing with delight. The fresh seafood, prepared with a dash of local flair, was a culinary experience I'll cherish forever. The serene coastal setting added to the enchantment of this culinary haven, as I watched the glistening sun bounce off the water with a gin & tonic.

The Enchanting Masca Region: A Test of Nerves.

For those with a sense of adventure and nerves of steel, a drive through the Masca region is a must. The winding mountain roads offer breath-taking vistas of towering cliffs and lush green valleys. It's a journey that takes you through the heart of Tenerife's wilderness, and it's not for the faint of heart. But the reward is the unparalleled beauty of this untouched natural wonder.

In Tenerife, I felt safe and welcomed in all places.
