Sun, Sea and a Touch of Gold: My Fort Lauderdale & Caribbean Escape with Celebrity Cruises

Gayle Chase on 01 Jun 2025

Last June I was lucky enough to enjoy a very special Gold trip: a sunshine filled escape that started on the sands of Fort Lauderdale, continued with a four night cruise on Celebrity Reflection, and finished with a little retail therapy in Miami.

If you love the idea of combining a stylish beach stay, a premium cruise and a splash of shopping, this is a perfect little itinerary to inspire your next getaway.

A Warm Welcome in Fort Lauderdale

My journey began with an overnight stay at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale. After landing, there is nothing better than waking up to the sound of the ocean and knowing your holiday has truly started.

The Diplomat sits right on the beach, so you have that instant “I’ve arrived” feeling:

  • Soft sand just steps from the hotel
  • Palm‑fringed pools where you can unwind after your flight
  • A choice of bars and restaurants so you do not have to venture far for a cocktail or dinner

That first evening was all about shaking off the travel day: a walk along the shoreline, a relaxed meal and an early night, ready for embarkation the following day.

Embarking Celebrity Reflection

The next morning, I made my way to the port to board Celebrity Reflection for a four‑night Caribbean sailing. Embarkation was smooth and efficient, and before long I was stepping into the cool calm of the ship’s atrium with a glass of bubbly in hand.

What I particularly love about Celebrity is the atmosphere on board:

  • Contemporary design with a subtle, grown‑up feel
  • Attentive but relaxed service
  • Excellent dining, from main restaurant to speciality venues
  • Plenty of quiet spots to read, people‑watch or simply gaze at the ocean

By the time we sailed out of port, the skyline of Fort Lauderdale behind us and the open sea ahead, it already felt like a true escape.

Day 1: Colourful Key West

Our first port of call was Key West, the quirky, laid‑back island at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys.

Key West has a unique character: pastel‑coloured wooden houses, flowering verandas, chickens wandering the streets and that famously relaxed “come as you are” attitude. Highlights of a day here can include:

  • Strolling along Duval Street for cafés, bars and boutiques
  • Snapping a photo at the Southernmost Point marker
  • Visiting Ernest Hemingway’s former home and its famous six‑toed cats
  • Enjoying a slice of authentic Key lime pie in the sunshine

You can do as much or as little as you like: explore on foot, join an organised excursion, or simply sit with a cold drink and watch the world go by. I loved the way the island feels both historic and slightly bohemian, with a strong sense of local pride.

Back on board, sailing away from Key West as the sun set, there was that lovely “floating city” feeling: dinner, a show, a quiet nightcap and then bed, ready for the next day at sea.

Day 2: A Relaxing Day at Sea

Sea days are often my favourite part of a cruise, and this one was no exception. With no rush to be anywhere, you really feel the benefit of being looked after from morning till night.

On Celebrity Reflection, a typical day at sea might include:

  • A leisurely breakfast on deck with ocean views
  • Time by the pool or in the adults‑only Solarium
  • A spa treatment or thermal suite session for extra pampering
  • A wine tasting, cookery demo or enrichment talk
  • Sunset drinks followed by dinner in one of the restaurants

It is also the perfect opportunity to really appreciate the ship: the artwork, the design, the little pockets of quiet. For clients who are usually busy and on the go, a day like this is often what they end up treasuring most.

Day 3: Perfect Day at CocoCay

Our next stop was Perfect Day at CocoCay, the private island playground in the Bahamas. It is designed for pure fun in the sun, and you can tailor the day to your own style.

On CocoCay you might:

  • Relax on soft white sand and swim in impossibly turquoise water
  • Book a cabana for a more private base with shade and attentive service
  • Drift around the lagoon‑style pools with a cocktail in hand
  • Try out the waterpark and slides if you are feeling adventurous

What I really enjoyed was the choice. You can make it as chilled or as lively as you like, whether that is a lazy beach day or something more active. Families, couples and groups of friends all find their own way to enjoy it.

Sailing away from CocoCay, with sun‑warmed skin and that slightly sleepy, happy feeling, was a real highlight.

Disembarkation & A Spot of Shopping in Miami

After four nights on board, we arrived back into port and disembarked. Instead of heading straight to the airport, there was time for one last treat: a spot of shopping at one of Miami’s malls.

This is a lovely way to round off the trip:

  • Picking up some last‑minute gifts or treats
  • Taking advantage of US brands and outlet prices
  • Enjoying a relaxed lunch before your flight

By the time I headed to the airport, I felt that I had squeezed every last drop out of the short break: beach time, cruising, island‑hopping and a little retail therapy to finish.

Why I Loved This Itinerary

For me, this combination worked beautifully because it offered:

  • A gentle start: an overnight beach stay in Fort Lauderdale to recover from the flight and ease into holiday mode.
  • A premium cruise experience: Celebrity Reflection provided that balance of relaxed luxury, great food and attentive service.
  • Varied ports in just four nights: charming Key West, a restorative sea day and a fun‑filled private island.
  • A practical ending: time to shop in Miami before flying home, making the most of every minute.

It is a fantastic option if you:

  • Want a short, sunshine‑filled escape without using too much annual leave
  • Enjoy the idea of seeing several places without constantly packing and unpacking
  • Appreciate good food, stylish surroundings and a relaxed but polished atmosphere on board
