Cruising Through Japan – A Summer to Remember

Graham Leyland on 21 June 2025
This summer, my wife Donna and I set off on an unforgettable cruise around Japan, starting in South Korea and wrapping up in Tokyo. I just had to share a few highlights from the trip—Japan truly blew us away, and I think it might just be my favourite place on the planet.

Before diving into Japan, we spent some time in Seoul. What a city! It’s a buzzing mix of ancient tradition and futuristic flair. From the majestic Gyeongbokgung Palace to the neon-lit streets of Myeongdong and Gangnam, Seoul kept us on our toes. The food was incredible, the public transport was a dream, and the views along the Han River were just stunning. If you ever get the chance—go!

Kyoto was like stepping into a time machine. Once Japan’s imperial capital, it’s packed with beautiful temples, peaceful gardens, and charming old streets like Gion. . Visitors can experience ancient rituals at shrines such as Fushimi Inari Taisha, admire the seasonal beauty of cherry blossoms or autumn leaves, and enjoy traditional cuisine and tea ceremonies. Despite its deep historical roots, Kyoto also embraces modernity, making it a harmonious blend of past and present. One of the coolest things we learned? Geisha in Kyoto are called geiko, and their apprentices are maiko. You can actually walk down the street where they train and, if you're lucky, spot one gracefully gliding through the alleyways. Magical.

Hiroshima was deeply moving. The city’s tragic history is something everyone should learn about, and the Peace Memorial Park and Museum do a powerful job of honouring the past while promoting peace. But Hiroshima isn’t just about history—it’s also full of life. We loved strolling through Shukkeien Garden and taking a trip to Miyajima Island to see the famous floating torii gate. It’s a must-visit if you’re in Japan.

And finally—Tokyo! What a way to end the trip. This city is a whirlwind of energy, innovation, and tradition. We explored the buzzing districts of Shibuya and Shinjuku, ate like royalty, and soaked up the pop culture vibes. But Tokyo also has its quiet side, with peaceful spots like Meiji Shrine and the Imperial Palace gardens. It’s a city that truly has it all.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞…

I can’t wrap this up without mentioning the incredible people of Japan. They’re the most respectful, kind, and helpful folks we’ve ever met. As our taxi driver said on the way to the airport, “Please visit Japan again.” We absolutely will.
