A family escape to Antigua: turtles, tortoises and toes in the sand
In May 2026 we pressed pause on everyday life and escaped to Antigua for a short but unforgettable family break. With two beach‑loving “wild girls” in tow, we wanted sunshine, sea, wildlife and a good dose of laid‑back Caribbean luxury. Splitting our stay between St James’s Club and 5* Carlisle Bay gave us the perfect balance of family fun and spoil‑yourself calm.
Getting there: films, food and a friendly time difference
One of the reasons this trip worked so well as a quick escape was the journey. We left home around 6 am to get to London Gatwick, coffee in hand and that familiar holiday buzz kicking in. Our direct flight to Antigua was around nine hours: just right for two films, two meals, some games with the girls and a very welcome nap. With only a five‑hour time difference, we arrived mid‑afternoon feeling that nice mix of tired and excited rather than upside‑down. Stepping off the plane into warm Antiguan air, clearing customs and then driving through the island’s lush, hilly interior to the south‑eastern corner, we could feel the pace of life slowing with every mile.

Checking in to St James’s Club: peninsulas, beaches and tree‑top coffee
St James’s Club sits on its own private peninsula on the south‑east coast of Antigua, wrapped by turquoise water on both sides. It has that “hidden cove” feeling, but with plenty going on once you are there. What we loved about the resort:
• Multiple beaches: You can choose between calm, sheltered Mamora Bay, perfect for paddling, kayaks and little legs, and a more open Atlantic‑facing beachfront with a breezier, wilder feel. Switching beaches felt like switching holidays.
• Beachfront grill dining: There is something incredibly special about eating with your toes in the sand. The beachfront grill quickly became a favourite for relaxed lunches and dinners: freshly grilled dishes, sea views and the sound of the waves right next to our table.
• Café built around a stunning tree:Tucked within the resort is a gorgeous little café literally built around a beautiful, mature tree. It feels almost magical, with branches overhead and dappled light as you sip your coffee or treat the kids to ice cream. It became our “meet you there” spot.
• On‑site tortoise sanctuary: For animal‑mad children (and parents) the small tortoise sanctuary on site was such a treat. The girls adored seeing the tortoises pottering around and learning a little about them. It added a gentle, educational layer to their beach‑and‑pool days.
By the time we had explored, had a relaxed dinner and watched the last of the daylight fade over the water, we were ready to fall into bed and wake up fresh for our first full day in paradise.

First day: breakfast buddies and poolside bliss
Our first morning at St James’s Club set the tone beautifully. We started with a fantastic buffet breakfast: live cooking stations for made‑to‑order eggs and pancakes, a huge variety of fresh fruit, pastries, hot dishes and all the bits that keep adults and children equally happy. The atmosphere was relaxed, with that gentle hum of people planning their days.
The stars of the show, though, were the tiny birds that hopped between tables and occasionally helped themselves to a sip of juice if we were not paying attention. The girls were enchanted. It felt like such a classic Caribbean holiday moment: sunshine, sea views and feathered breakfast companions. The rest of the morning was unapologetically simple and perfect. We cooled off in the pool, my little mermaids made full use of the inflatables, my husband bonded happily with the reef bar and I settled into my own personal speciality: sunbathing, book in hand, occasionally lifting my head to count how many times the girls shouted “Watch me!”. Sometimes the best holiday memories are made doing absolutely nothing complicated at all.
Friday night beach BBQ: food, floaties and moonlight The highlight of our stay at St James’s Club was the Friday night beach BBQ, which turned into one of those evenings you wish you could bottle. The culinary spread was incredible: fresh seafood sizzling on the grills, champagne flowing, jerk chicken packed with flavour, an array of salads and all the sides you could possibly want. There were also plenty of “floaties”, the kind of airy, cloud‑like desserts that seem to just hover on your plate until you give in and eat them, all washed down with generous cups of rum punch.
As the sun set, the atmosphere ramped up. Traditional dancers and drummers took to the sand, bringing the island’s culture to life with colour and rhythm, followed by a DJ keeping everyone moving. All of this played out under a velvet sky, lit by the moon, with sand between our toes and the sea a few metres away. It was one of those quintessential Caribbean nights: joyful, relaxed and just a little bit magical.
Wildlife wonder at Laviscount Island
A real standout experience for us was our visit to Laviscount Island, which was a dream for my wildlife‑mad girls. There we learned about the natural environment, from native trees to the animals that call the island home. We were lucky enough to meet and see red‑footed tortoises and giant tortoises, and to hear how the conservation team protects the tiniest babies from natural predators like mongooses and certain birds. For the girls, it was like stepping into a nature documentary, but with the chance to ask questions and see everything up close. For me, it felt wonderful to give them an experience that was fun, educational and rooted in genuine care for the animals and their habitat.
It was one of those days that quietly shapes how children see the world.

Switching gears: checking in to 5* Carlisle Bay
We ended our Antiguan escape with a stay at the sublime 5* Carlisle Bay, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, and from the moment we arrived it was obvious why it holds that badge.
The mood shifted from lively family resort to laid‑back luxury. Service was impeccable in that effortless way where everything appears exactly when you need it without ever feeling fussy. Our Beach Balcony Suite was beautiful: spacious, thoughtfully designed and opening directly onto views that genuinely took our breath away. It happened to be Mother’s Day in Antigua, which added an extra layer of joy. Morale was high, staff and guests were in wonderful spirits and the whole resort had that relaxed, celebratory feel.

Beach, bay and gentle snorkelling
The bay at Carlisle is a proper “screensaver come to life” moment. The sand is powder‑soft underfoot, the sea is that perfect just‑warm‑enough temperature that makes wading in an absolute pleasure, and the water is calm and clear. We were surrounded by tropical fish right at the shoreline. The sea was calm enough for the girls to snorkel just off the beach while we sat and soaked up the views, occasionally bobbing alongside them to point out a particularly colourful fish.

Dining to remember
Ottimo! and Indigo on the Beach Food at Carlisle Bay was a highlight in its own right.
• Ottimo! served up a masterpiece of an Italian lunch: think wood‑fired flavours, fresh ingredients and plates that made us all go quiet in the best possible way for the first few bites. It was relaxed yet polished, exactly what you want for a leisurely family lunch in the sunshine.
• Indigo on the Beach elevated the evening with fine dining right by the water. The combination of beautifully presented dishes, attentive service and the sound of the sea in the background made it feel incredibly special but never stuffy, which is a hard balance to strike with children.
The girls were also completely charmed by one small but memorable detail: instead of a traditional “do not disturb” hanger, you place a conch shell outside your room. Paper hangers are not ideal in the steady trade winds, but conch shells certainly are. It is such a clever, characterful solution, and they took the responsibility very seriously. Those same trade winds, by the way, were very welcome: a cool, constant breeze that made the warmth perfectly comfortable.

Suite dreams and wave‑sound sleep
Our suite at Carlisle Bay felt like a treat in itself. ESPA toiletries added a spa‑like touch to a bathroom that was, frankly, bigger than my master bedroom at home. The whole space was designed for comfort and calm, with every detail thought through. The cherry on top was sleeping with the mosquito nets drawn around our beds and the balcony doors wide open, drifting off to the sound of waves gently rolling into the bay. It is the kind of thing you promise yourself you will remember on busy weekdays back home.
Breakfast did not let the side down either. My traditional Antiguan breakfast was one of the best I have ever eaten: full of flavour, comforting and exactly what I wanted to start the day. A brief, sharp tropical rain shower swept across the bay at one point, the kind that appears and disappears almost theatrically, leaving everything fresh and glistening. A perfect finale: pool time and a jetty grill send‑off We spent our final morning exactly as we should have: by the pool, moving slowly, swimming a little, reading a little and generally soaking up the last of that Caribbean calm. Before we left, we enjoyed a traditional Caribbean BBQ lunch at the Jetty Grill, complete with a steel band providing the soundtrack. Sunshine, grilled favourites, that unmistakable steel‑pan sound and the sea stretching out in front of us: it was the most perfect way to say goodbye to Antigua.
