Sailing the Norwegian Fjords on P&O’s Iona: A Journey to Remember

On 5th April 2025, I set off on a 7-night adventure aboard P&O’s Iona, departing from Southampton and cruising through the stunning Norwegian Fjords. As a travel agent, I’ve been on many cruises, but this one stood out — with stops in Olden, Stavanger, Kristiansand, and Havøysund, it was the perfect mix of natural beauty and onboard luxury.

Iona is one of P&O’s newest and most impressive ships, and it’s easy to see why she’s a favourite among cruisers. With a capacity for over 5,000 guests, the ship is spacious but never feels crowded. The SkyDome is a standout feature — a glass-roofed space that transforms from a relaxing pool area during the day to a vibrant entertainment venue at night. It’s especially popular with families, as there’s plenty of space for kids to splash around during the day and live shows in the evening. For anyone considering the ultimate cruise experience, I highly recommend upgrading to a balcony cabin. The views and scenery in the Norwegian Fjords are absolutely stunning, and having your own private balcony to take in the towering cliffs, pristine waters, and picturesque ports is worth every penny. Trust me, it’s a front-row seat to some of the most breathtaking landscapes you’ll ever see. While I stayed in an inside cabin, which was surprisingly spacious and comfortable, I would definitely recommend splurging on a balcony cabin if you're able to. You won’t regret it.

The ship offers plenty of activities for families, with kids’ clubs, splash zones, and family-friendly entertainment. However, personally, I found the size of the ship a little overwhelming at times. I’ve always enjoyed the more intimate atmosphere of smaller ships, so in my opinion, Iona might feel a bit too big if you prefer a quieter, more relaxed experience. But if you're after a lively and action-packed atmosphere with lots to see and do, it’s perfect for multi-generational families who want variety.

One of my favourite places to relax was the Crow’s Nest, especially during sailaways. The panoramic views are incredible, and it’s the ideal spot to enjoy a drink while watching the ship depart port. You get a real sense of the ship’s grandeur as you set sail into the stunning fjords.

Food & Dining

Iona offers an array of dining options to suit every taste. From casual bites at The Keel & Cow (the steak is fantastic) to fine dining at Sindhu, there’s something for everyone. I was particularly impressed by the Norwegian Taster Menu at The Epicurean, which was an absolute highlight. The dishes, inspired by Norwegian flavours, were a delicious way to experience the local cuisine while still enjoying the luxury of onboard dining. Speaking of The Epicurean, afternoon tea here is another must-try experience. It’s a lovely break from your day, served with elegance and delicious treats, all while enjoying panoramic sea views.

For dining flexibility, freedom dining is a great option, allowing you to eat at your own convenience without set dining times — perfect for those who want to explore the ports at their leisure. However, I’d highly recommend downloading the P&O app and pre-booking your dining, especially for popular spots like Sindhu and The Epicurean, as these fill up quickly.

Entertainment & Activities

Onboard Iona, there’s no shortage of entertainment options for everyone. The daily programme is packed with a variety of activities, from theatre shows to quiz nights, keep fit classes, and craft workshops. Whether you're into fitness, arts, or just looking for a bit of fun, there’s something for every mood. The SkyDome transforms into a lively entertainment venue in the evenings, with a large glass roof offering a unique and open setting for performances.

For those who enjoy learning, there are also guest speakers throughout the week, sharing fascinating insights into the destinations, history, and culture of the places we visited. The theatre is always buzzing with performances, from West End-style musicals to comedy shows and live music.

Iona is also a popular choice for solo travellers. The ship offers special meet-ups and solo traveller events, making it easy to connect with like-minded cruisers. Whether you’re enjoying a casual drink in the bar or joining one of the group activities, it’s a great way to meet new people and share experiences.

Ports of Call

Olden was our first stop, and it’s a place straight out of a postcard. Nestled in the Nordfjord, it’s surrounded by dramatic mountains and crystal-clear waters. I highly recommend the Loen Skylift for some breathtaking views of the fjord.

Next, we made our way to Stavanger, a city with a lovely mix of old-world charm and modern energy. The Lysefjord boat tour was a highlight — especially getting up close to the iconic Pulpit Rock.

We then sailed to Kristiansand, a coastal town with a relaxed vibe, great cafes, and a charming old town to wander through.

Havøysund, one of the more remote ports, was another fantastic stop. This small village is set against the dramatic backdrop of Norway’s northern coastline and offers a peaceful and unspoiled atmosphere. It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys exploring nature in its most raw and untouched form. The surrounding landscape is stunning — think snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear waters, and the vastness of the Arctic.

Final Thoughts

Cruising the Norwegian Fjords aboard the Iona was an experience I’ll never forget. The stunning scenery, the diverse onboard offerings, and the ability to experience multiple ports in one trip makes it perfect for families or anyone looking for a cruise packed with variety. While I personally prefer the intimacy of smaller ships, Iona offers a fantastic blend of luxury and adventure that would suit anyone looking to explore Norway’s incredible landscapes in style.

If you’re thinking about cruising to the Norwegian Fjords or want to learn more about life aboard Iona, I’d be happy to share my experience and help you plan your perfect getaway.
