Villa Holidays: Your Relaxed Base With Room To Breathe

Not fly‑and‑flop. Not anonymous rental.
Think instead: a relaxed home‑from‑home, in a beautiful setting, that becomes your base for slow days, local exploring, good food and a little adventure when it suits you.

For my clients, villa time is often where shoulders finally drop. The pace becomes your own: breakfast when you feel like it, a dip in “your” pool, maybe a drive to a hilltop village or a long lunch by the sea. Then back to your own living room, terrace or garden, not a hotel lobby.

This guide sets out how villa holidays fit my existing pillars, how I match villas to different types of travellers, and the kind of destinations I include in my villa portfolio.

How Villa Holidays Fit My Existing Expertise

My 5 Travel Expertise Pillars are:

  1. Expedition & Adventure Cruises
  2. River & Boutique Ocean Cruises
  3. Adventure & Touring Holidays
  4. Immersive City Breaks
  5. Villa Holidays

Villa stays are a natural extension of what I already design: trips with character, depth and a story, rather than “just a week away”.

Where my cruise and touring pillars focus on journeys, villa holidays focus on place: settling into one location and letting the experiences orbit around you. Many of my clients now like to combine them: for example, a week in a Greek villa after an island‑hopping cruise, or a Tuscan villa following a European city break.

Who Villa Holidays Are Perfect For

Empty‑Nest & Professional Couples (40–60+)

For couples, villas offer unhurried time together that still feels interesting and grown‑up:

  • A peaceful base with your own pool and terrace for lazy mornings.
  • A car waiting on the drive so you can explore vineyards, coastal paths or little harbour towns.
  • One or two special experiences: a private chef night, a day sailing, a wine tasting or a guided foodie walk in the nearest town.

This style of villa holiday works especially well in France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and the Greek Islands, but also further afield in Thailand, Bali, Costa Rica and South Africa for those wanting something more adventurous.

Active Families & Multi‑Generation Groups

For families and multi‑gen trips, villas solve a lot of little frictions:

  • Space and privacy so teenagers, grandparents and little ones can all do their own thing.
  • Your own pool so there is always somewhere to play without watching the clock.
  • Relaxed mealtimes: eggs on toast at 11am or simple pasta under the stars, without worrying about dress codes or fixed buffet hours.
  • Options for soft adventure: boat days, gentle coastal walks, light touring by car, a local cooking class, a wildlife trip or a visit to a nearby historic town.

Destinations that shine for this include Spain (mainland, Balearics, Canaries), Portugal (including Madeira), Greece, Italy, Croatia, Turkey, the Caribbean, Mexico, Costa Rica, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Friends’ Groups & Solo Travellers

For friends travelling together, a villa means:

  • Shared living spaces where you can actually spend time together, not separate hotel corridors.
  • The flexibility to split days: some on the terrace with a book, others out hiking or on the water.
  • Better value once costs are divided across multiple bedrooms.

For solo travellers, a small cottage or apartment can be a secure, self‑contained base within walking distance of a village or town. You have privacy and a proper kitchen, but still access to local cafés, markets and day trips.

Why Villa Holidays Work So Well

Villa holidays are not just “fly & flop”. For the right traveller, they are:

“A relaxed base, with optional layers of touring, food and sailing.”

Villas are a smart way to:

  • Have your own space and rhythm: no rushing for breakfast, no pool lounger battles, no noisy corridors.
  • Mix lazy days with a few planned experiences: a vineyard visit, a day on a catamaran, exploring hilltop villages, guided nature walks or market tours.
  • Keep things easy for different energy levels in the same group: early‑rising kids, grandparents who need a quiet afternoon, teens who appear at noon.

My role is to help you find the right balance of privacy, comfort and experiences, and to handle the logistics so it all feels effortless.

My Personal Villa Experience

I never recommend villa holidays in theory alone. I have experienced villa stays personally in:

  • Barbados
  • Greece
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Thailand

Staying in these properties has given me a feel for the little details that matter:
how private the pool really feels, whether you can walk to a bakery in the morning, how the bedrooms work for multi‑gen families, and what it is like to drive those local roads after dark.

When we talk about your villa holiday, I can draw on this experience to help guide you towards the kind of stay that genuinely fits your style and comfort levels.

Frequently Asked Questions About Villa Holidays

1. Are villa holidays only suitable for big groups or families?
Not at all. While villas work brilliantly for larger groups, they also suit couples and solos who value privacy, space and a relaxed rhythm. The key is choosing the right size, layout and location for you.

2. How do we handle shopping, cooking and cleaning on a villa holiday?
This depends on the destination and style of villa. Some include housekeeping, breakfast or a cook, while others are more self‑catered. I can arrange extras like a welcome shop, private chef nights, or mid‑stay cleans so you are not tied to domestic chores.

3. Is a car essential for a villa holiday?
Often, yes, especially in rural settings. A car opens up local villages, coves, markets and viewpoints. If you prefer not to drive, I can focus on villas within walking distance of amenities and arrange private transfers or occasional taxis and tours instead.

4. How do you choose which villas to recommend?
I look carefully at your group, travel style and budget, then work only with trusted partners who meet certain standards. I pay attention to location, layout, accessibility, privacy levels, and the quality of facilities and service.

5. Are villa holidays good value compared to hotels?
For couples, they can be comparable to a good hotel. For families and groups sharing a multi‑bedroom villa, they can often be better value, especially once you factor in shared spaces, a kitchen and private pool instead of several separate rooms.

6. Can you combine a villa stay with other types of travel?
Absolutely. Many of my favourite trips combine a villa with touring, city breaks or cruises: for example, a week in a Tuscan villa after a few days in Florence, or a Thai island villa following a cultural stay in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

7. What about safety and support if something goes wrong?
I only recommend villas through reputable partners, and your holiday comes with the backing and protection of booking through a professional Travel Counsellor. You are not left dealing with an individual owner on your own if something unexpected crops up.

8. How far in advance should we book a villa?
For peak dates (school holidays, August, Christmas and New Year), I recommend booking 9–12 months ahead, especially for the most sought‑after destinations and layouts. Shoulder seasons can be more flexible, but good villas still go early.

9. Can you arrange extras like boat days, chefs and touring?
Yes. This is where a villa holiday really comes to life: I can build in boat trips, light touring, walking days, cooking classes, wine tastings and private chef evenings, tailored to your interests and energy levels.

10. What information do you need from us to start planning a villa holiday?
A rough set of dates, preferred destinations, the make‑up of your party, and how you like to spend your days is enough for a first conversation. From there I can suggest a shortlist of areas and villa styles that will work for you.
