From £5,275 per person

You’ll fly into Denver, spending two nights at the luxurious Magnolia Hotel, with the opportunity to explore the fascinating Colorado capital. Delve into its Old West history, visit the Denver Art Museum to view its collection of indigenous works, and don’t miss the mansion of Molly Brown, the famed Titanic survivor.

From Denver, you’ll drive to Grand Junction, the hub of Colorado's wine country and home to the Museum of the West. Here, you can access the trails of the Colorado National Monument with its red sandstone monoliths and canyons. After an exciting day, you’ll spend the night at Grand Junction’s Hotel Maverick – a modern and stylish property, with an outdoor plunge pool.

You’ll then stay for two nights at Moab’s Redcliffs Lodge, which is great for wellness, with yoga and horse riding among its offerings. Perched on the Colorado River and framed by majestic cliffs in southeastern Utah’s adventure mecca, this rustic getaway combines frontier-inspired decor with gorgeous views, as well as being home to the Moab Museum of Film & Western Heritage and Moab’s Ford Bronco Off-Roadeo Experience.

Wide open spaces

Moving onto Salt Lake City, where you’ll stay in the Grand America Hotel with its pools and spa, you’ll get two days to explore the Utah capital and world Mormon capital. From here you’ll continue into Wyoming, where Jackson Hole awaits with its fishing, rafting, ranches, and fine dining. The Wort Hotel, your base for a few days, offers historic charm and live music.

The following four nights are spent getting to know Yellowstone National Park. You’ll spend two of them in the Old Faithful Inn, a national historic landmark, built in 1904 with local logs and stone, and located a short walk from the famous geyser of the same name.

You’ll also spend a night in Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel with elk grazing right outside. Yellowstone became the world’s first national park in 1872 and features more geysers, hot springs, and geothermal features than anywhere else in the world. Your last night here will be at the cosy Cody Hotel with its indoor pool, hot tub, and roaring fires.

Sheridan beckons next: Wyoming’s ‘emerald city’, with dramatic vistas of the Bighorn Mountains. After a night at the historic Sheridan Inn with its rooms named after the likes of Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley, you’ll drive to South Dakota, spending two nights at Rapid City’s landmark Hotel Alex Johnson as you discover local sights – the most famous of which is Mount Rushmore, the vast sculpture of four US presidents.

Your last stop is Cheyenne back in Wyoming, where attractions include the Frontier Days Old West Museum, the Wyoming State Museum with its dinosaur fossils, and the 1904 Historic Governors’ Mansion.
