Lake Palace Hotel Udaipur

There are places that welcome you, and there are places that enchant you. Lake Palace Hotel in Udaipur, once the summer retreat of Maharana Jagat Singh II is firmly in the latter category. Floating like a marble jewel on the serene waters of Lake Pichola, this 18th-century palace is more than a hotel. It’s a living storybook of royal elegance, cinematic fantasy, and deeply personal hospitality.

Lake Palace Hotel, Udaipur: A Floating Romance of History, Luxury, and Heart.

I visited India with a friend a couple of years ago, and our journey throughout this amazing land was truly unforgettable, however it was here, at the Lake Palace, that the romance of travel truly came alive.

Arrival by Boat: The First Whisper of Magic

Our arrival set the tone as our transport dropped us at the hotels private pier, where a small boat awaited us, we were helped aboard and immediately started gliding gently across the lake. The palace shimmered in the distance, ethereal and timeless. Stepping off the boat and approaching the main entrance, rose petals were being scattered by hand from above,  a gesture both traditional and theatrical, it felt like we were stepping into a dream.

This wasn’t just a welcome. It was a moment of transformation. We weren’t tourists anymore — we were guests of the palace.

A Palace with a Past: History Comes Alive

Built between 1743 and 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, the Lake Palace originally named Jag Niwas was designed as a pleasure retreat for moonlit picnics and royal gatherings. One legend states that the young prince, forbidden by his father to entertain guests at Jag Mandir palace, commissioned this new palace on the lake as a more secluded escape.

Today, a Taj group hotel it offers personal tours led by historians who bring its rich and colourful past to life. Wandering along marble corridors and through tranquil courtyards, you imagine those stories of royal intrigue, marvel at the architectural splendour and delight in the palace’s transformation into one of the world’s most luxurious hotels. It’s not just informative, it’s immersive. You begin to see the palace not as a building, but as a character in its own right.

A Cinematic Legacy: Octopussy and Beyond

The Lake Palace isn’t just famous for its history, it’s also a star. In 1983, it played a central role in the James Bond film Octopussy, serving as Octopussy’s floating lair. Walking through the hotel, you can almost hear the echoes of Bond’s footsteps and imagine the film crew capturing its grandeur. A thrill for movie lovers, the hotel ensures that copies of the film are available should they be required, a gesture that we just had to accept and more importantly enjoyed one evening, as we tucked into room service treats after a full day of exploration.

Service That Anticipates, Not Just Responds

What truly sets the Lake Palace apart is its service. It’s not just impeccable,  it’s intuitive. Every gesture feels personal, every interaction sincere. One afternoon, we mentioned in passing that my travel companion adored peacocks. The next day, a beautifully crafted fabric peacock appeared in our room, accompanied by a thoughtful note. The staff had even contacted their sister hotel in Rajasthan, our next stop, to let them know. And sure enough, we were greeted there by the real thing, more of this in the next blog.

This kind of attention to detail is rare. Whether it’s an impromptu pot of tea served in a quiet corner of the hotel where you just happen to have paused to reflect, or an indulgent cocktail delivered as you sink into an overly cosy armchair in the bar, nothing is too much trouble. The staff don’t just serve, they delight.

Rooms That Whisper Luxury

Each room at the Lake Palace is a sanctuary. Rich fabrics, antique furnishings, and views that stretch across the lake and the Aravalli hills creating a cocoon of comfort and beauty. Whether you’re in a Palace Room or a Grand Royal Suite, the experience is one of timeless elegance. It’s not flashy, it’s cultured, elegant and refined.

Lake Pichola: The Soul of Udaipur

Lake Pichola itself is a masterpiece. Created in 1362 by a local banjara (gypsy) named Pichu Banjara, the lake was later expanded by Maharana Udai Singh II to support his new capital, Udaipur. Today, it spans nearly 4 square kilometres and is surrounded by palaces, temples, ghats, and gardens.

At sunrise, the lake glows gold. At dusk, it turns to silver. And in between, it reflects the romance of Udaipur in every ripple. A sunset boat ride is a must, the changing light, the gentle breeze, and the silhouette of the Lake Palace create a moment you’ll never forget.

Exploring the Surroundings: Udaipur’s Treasures

The Lake Palace is perfectly positioned to explore Udaipur’s many wonders:

  • City Palace Museum: Just minutes away, this sprawling complex offers a glimpse into Mewar’s royal heritage, with ornate courtyards, galleries, and panoramic views.

  • Crystal Gallery: Located within Fateh Prakash Palace, this gallery showcases rare crystal furniture and objets d’art commissioned by Maharana Sajjan Singh.

  • Shilpgram: A vibrant arts and crafts village just 3 km away, perfect for picking up handmade textiles, pottery, and folk art.

  • Doodh Talai Musical Garden: A charming spot for evening strolls, with musical fountains and views of the lake and city.

  • Panghat Spa by Zivaya: For those seeking relaxation, this spa within the City Palace complex offers traditional treatments in a regal setting.

Whether you’re wandering through ancient palaces, shopping for local crafts, or simply soaking in the views, Udaipur offers a rich tapestry of experiences.

A Personal Reflection: Why This Matters

As a passionate travel curator, I seek out places that offer more than just luxury,  I look for soul. The Lake Palace has it in abundance. It’s not just the marble, the history, or the cinematic flair. It’s the way it makes you feel. Cherished. Seen. Inspired.

This is the kind of experience I love crafting for my clients. Travel that goes beyond the expected. Travel that becomes memory.

If you’re dreaming of India, let’s make it cinematic. Let’s make it royal. Let’s make it yours.

The adventure continues in my next blog — Rajasthan awaits.
