New Zealand - Why the Bay of Islands Deserves a Place on Your Itinerary

Having been lucky enough to live in New Zealand, I know there is so much more to this incredible country than the places that first spring to mind.  The Bay of Islands is one of those destinations that can easily be overlooked when planning a classic New Zealand road trip.

Located in Northland, just a few hours’ drive from Auckland, the Bay of Islands feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and its an ideal place to recover from the long journey to get to New Zealand.  Think sparkling blue waters, green rolling hills, secluded beaches and charming coastal towns. There’s a wonderfully laid-back feel here, where days seem to unfold at a gentler pace and there’s no need to rush from one experience to the next. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast, wander along the waterfront, stop for a coffee or simply find a beautiful spot to take in the scenery. Sometimes, the most memorable parts of a holiday are the places where you have time to simply enjoy being there.

The Bay of Islands is made up of more than 140 islands, scattered across a stunning stretch of coastline. The combination of turquoise waters, forested hills and hidden coves makes it a beautiful destination for anyone who loves being near the sea. A boat trip is a wonderful way to appreciate the area. You can explore the islands, discover secluded bays and, depending on the experience and season, look out for dolphins and other marine life. For those who prefer to stay on land, there are coastal walks, beaches and scenic viewpoints to enjoy. The beauty here isn’t necessarily about one big landmark—it’s about the collection of little moments and landscapes that make you stop and admire your surroundings.

The Bay of Islands is also an important part of New Zealand’s history. Nearby Waitangi is home to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, one of the country’s most significant historical sites. It offers an opportunity to learn more about Māori culture, New Zealand’s history and the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It’s a fascinating place to include in a visit, adding depth and context to the beautiful surroundings. The historic town of Russell, once known as Kororāreka, is another lovely place to explore. With its waterfront setting, heritage buildings, cafés and relaxed atmosphere, it’s easy to see why visitors enjoy taking their time here.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy, from sailing and kayaking to scenic cruises, fishing and exploring the coastline. But it’s equally suited to those who simply want to relax and soak up the atmosphere. Imagine waking up to views across the water, spending the day exploring little coastal villages, enjoying fresh local food and watching the sun set over the islands. It’s a different side of New Zealand—peaceful, welcoming and wonderfully unhurried.

Don’t just fly into Auckland and head south. If you’re planning a New Zealand adventure, I’d really encourage you to look beyond the traditional route.

Auckland is a fantastic gateway, but Northland and the Bay of Islands deserve more than a quick mention on the map.
