Into the Heart of Borneo: Designing a Client’s Sabah Adventure

Jess Harrison on 23 Feb 2026

Borneo is one of those destinations that captures the imagination: ancient rainforest, rare wildlife and rich indigenous cultures all on one island. My clients came to me with a clear dream in mind: they wanted proper adventure, immersive wildlife and some creature comforts, without the stress of piecing it all together. Working closely with my trusted local partners, I turned that dream into a seamless journey: a city break in Singapore, then on to Sabah for a loop that took in Kota Kinabalu, Kinabalu Park, Danum Valley, the Kinabatangan River and Sandakan, finishing with a relaxing coastal stay.

City Bookends: Why We Chose Singapore

To make the long-haul travel as smooth as possible, we built in time in Singapore at both ends of the trip. It is one of my favourite cities to pair with Borneo: efficient, walkable, full of green spaces and incredible food.

At the start, they spent four nights in Singapore: enough time to recover from the flight, explore different neighbourhoods and ease into the climate before heading into the jungle. They could stretch their legs around Marina Bay, dip into Little India and Chinatown, visit the gardens and enjoy relaxed evenings with great food and a comfortable bed.

On the way back, we added a final night in Singapore. This meant no tight connections after their domestic flights and road journeys in Sabah, just one last evening of skyline views, a celebratory dinner and a calm, unhurried departure home the next day.

Kota Kinabalu & Kinabalu Park: A Gentle Start

From Singapore they flew to Kota Kinabalu, where a private transfer took them straight to their central hotel. I built in a free day at the start so they could wander the waterfront, explore local markets, visit the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque and ease into the time zone at their own pace.

One of the early highlights was a full day trip to Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Spring. The journey itself is beautiful, passing villages and paddy fields with a stop at Nabalu Market to browse local produce and handicrafts. In the park they explored the Botanical Garden and, on a clear day, had the chance to glimpse Mount Kinabalu. Afterwards they continued to Poring to enjoy the hot springs and walk the canopy walkway high in the treetops before returning to Kota Kinabalu.

Danum Valley: Deep in the Rainforest

After their time in Kota Kinabalu, my clients took a short domestic flight to Lahad Datu, then continued by road into Danum Valley to stay at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. The further they travelled, the more remote it felt, with roads gradually giving way to dense primary rainforest.

Danum was their true ‘heart of the jungle’ experience. Days were spent on guided walks and drives, learning about the forest, looking for birds and mammals and visiting sites such as waterfalls and ancient burial coffins. Evenings brought talks from the lodge’s naturalist guides, walks along the canopy walkway and, when the weather allowed, night drives to search for nocturnal wildlife. Danum is one of the best places in Borneo to look for orangutans, gibbons and hornbills, and that constant sense of possibility is a huge part of its magic.

Kinabatangan River & Sukau: Life on the Water

From Lahad Datu they continued overland to Sukau, a small riverside community on the Kinabatangan River, one of Sabah’s most wildlife-rich areas. Their base here was Sukau Greenview Bed & Breakfast, a simple, friendly place right on the river.

Their time on the Kinabatangan was all about life on the water. River cruises focused on spotting proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills and a rich variety of birdlife, with the exciting chance of seeing Bornean pygmy elephants along the banks. They also explored quieter tributaries and joined gentle walks in the surrounding forest. After dark, gentle cruises and short walks focused on nocturnal wildlife such as brightly coloured kingfishers, owls, frogs and, sometimes, the gleam of crocodile eyes in the torchlight.

Sandakan & Sepilok: Conservation in Focus

The next stop was Sandakan and the famous Sepilok area. Here they visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to see how orphaned and injured orangutans are cared for and gradually returned to the wild, and then the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about efforts to protect the world’s smallest bear.

A simple local lunch and a short city tour gave them a feel for Sandakan itself, including the market, a traditional water village and one of the city’s hilltop temples, before an overnight stay at Sabah Hotel Sandakan.

Coastal Unwind: Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai

To finish, my clients flew back to Kota Kinabalu and spent two nights at Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai. After days of jungle trails and river safaris, this was their time to slow down completely: soft sand, spa treatments, poolside relaxation and one last Bornean sunset. Another wonderful option here, depending on preferences and availability, is Gaya Island Resort, which adds a private island feel just offshore.

Turning a Dream into a Journey

This kind of Borneo itinerary is ideal for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, couples or solo travellers who want a mix of adventure and comfort, and families with older children or teens who enjoy being outdoors. My clients brought me ‘Borneo’ as their dream; my role was to shape it into a route that was realistic, joined up and completely tailored to them.

If you are imagining orangutans at dawn, river cruises at sunset and time in one of the world’s oldest rainforests, I can design a Borneo adventure built entirely around you. Contact me to start planning your own Sabah journey.
