Six weeks in Australia: A Once in a Lifetime Retirement Adventure

Jo Powell on 01 Mar 2026

Australia - end to end

Today marks a bittersweet moment for me and for two very special clients: it is their final day of an incredible six‑week journey around Australia, created to celebrate their mutual retirement.

From the very first conversation back in October 2024, this trip has been a real labour of love. We did not simply book everything in one go. Instead, we carefully added flights, hotels, tours and experiences as they were released, shaping a seamless, once‑in‑a‑lifetime adventure piece by piece.

They set off in mid March, beginning with a three‑night stopover in Kuala Lumpur. Flying with Malaysian Airlines meant they could avoid travelling via the Middle East, and enjoy a smooth start to their adventure. From there, they headed south to Australia for a route that combined cities, coastlines, iconic rail journeys and some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes.

The journey: six weeks across Australia

Their itinerary was designed to balance exploration and relaxation, structure and freedom, with each stage building on the last.

Melbourne & Phillip Island

First stop: vibrant Melbourne. Here they enjoyed the city’s culture and café scene, with an excursion to Phillip Island, famous for its wildlife and stunning coastal views. It was the perfect soft landing into Australia after a long‑haul journey.

Tasmania by campervan

From Melbourne they flew to Hobart and swapped hotels for a week in a campervan. I had created a rough route for them to follow, leaving enough flexibility for spontaneous stops while still ensuring they saw Tasmania’s highlights. This self‑drive section gave them the freedom to explore at their own pace, with the reassurance of a suggested itinerary in hand.

Sydney & the Blue Mountains

Next, they flew to Sydney for six nights. Their time here included a visit to the iconic Sydney Opera House, a leisurely harbour lunch cruise and a guided Rocks walking tour that brought the city’s history to life.

After the buzz of Sydney, they headed into the Blue Mountains for a few days. This part of the trip offered dramatic scenery, fresh air and the chance to slow down and absorb everything they had experienced so far.

Hamilton Island & the Great Barrier Reef

From the mountains to the reef: Hamilton Island was their next destination, offering that quintessential Australian island feel. Afterward, they picked up a car for a self‑drive journey from Cairns to Port Douglas, including a cruise out to the Great Barrier Reef. This experience is very high on my own bucket list, so I was especially thrilled to help make it a reality for them.

The Ghan, the Red Centre & Darwin

Their adventure then shifted gears with a rail journey on the iconic Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs, one of the world’s great train journeys. From Alice Springs they embarked on another self‑drive section to Kings Canyon and Ayers Rock (Uluru).

One of the real highlights for them was walking the Kings Canyon Rim, which they described as absolutely incredible. After exploring the Red Centre, they rejoined the Ghan and continued north to Darwin, experiencing the changing landscapes of Australia from the comfort of the train.

Western Australia finale: Perth, Rottnest Island & Margaret River

For the final leg, they flew to Perth. Here they enjoyed a day trip to Rottnest Island, famous for its laid‑back atmosphere and resident quokkas, before driving south to Margaret River and Karri Valley.

Margaret River’s vineyards and gourmet food, combined with the towering forests of Karri Valley, offered a wonderfully relaxing and scenic end to their adventure. It is here, in Karri Valley, that they are enjoying their final night of this extraordinary six‑week journey.

Why this trip felt so personal

So why does it feel bittersweet for me as well as for them?

Because this has been a journey I have lived and breathed alongside them. From that initial call in October, through every stage of planning and fine‑tuning, right up to the final confirmations, I have been fully invested in making sure their retirement trip was everything they hoped for and more.

Over 70 separate components went into this itinerary: flights, transfers, car hire, rail journeys, hotels, excursions and experiences. Each of these was checked, rechecked and triple checked before they left. During their time away, I stayed in touch and monitored everything in the background so they did not have to worry about the logistics.

Every email I have received from them during the trip has been filled with excitement and gratitude. They have described how amazing it has all been, how smoothly everything has run and how special it felt to be able to simply enjoy their retirement celebration, without the stress of planning it themselves.

For me, that is exactly what being a Travel Counsellor is about: creating a trip that is not only beautifully designed, but also carefully supported from start to finish, so my clients feel looked after every step of the way.

The value of working with trusted DMC partners

Trips of this scale are always a team effort, and one of the key reasons everything ran so smoothly was the support of our trusted destination management company (DMC) partner, Anzcro.

In this case, Anzcro kept me updated throughout their journey, which meant I could pass on any important information to my clients and ensure that each day flowed into the next with minimal effort on their part.

Planning your own extended adventure

Whether you are approaching retirement, marking a special occasion or simply dreaming of taking a longer break to explore the world, a trip like this does not have to remain a “someday” idea.

With thoughtful planning, the right partners and someone to oversee every detail from start to finish, an extended adventure can feel seamless, supported and truly special.

If you are starting to imagine your own big trip, I would love to help you turn those ideas into a personalised itinerary, designed around your interests, pace and budget, and supported every step of the way.
