A Grizzly Bear Adventure at Knight Inlet, British Columbia

Karen Munro on 18 Sept 2024

If you enjoy wildlife‑rich trips and simple, characterful lodges in beautiful settings, Knight Inlet in British Columbia is a fantastic option. In September 2024, my husband and I spent a few days there, and it quickly became one of our favourite travel experiences.

How it began...

When we started planning this Canada trip, we knew we wanted more than cities and scenic drives. We both love wildlife and quieter places, and seeing grizzly bears in the wild was high on the list, but in a way that felt respectful and well managed.

Knight Inlet soon stood out: a small lodge in a remote fjord, surrounded by forest and mountains, with experienced guides and a clear focus on responsible bear viewing. It sounded exactly like what we were looking for.

Journey into Knight Inlet

Getting to Knight Inlet feels like heading properly off the beaten track. From the coast, we took a float plane into the inlet. Flying in over islands and fjords, with views of forest, mountains and water in every direction, was a real highlight in its own right and one of those moments where you keep nudging each other to look out of the window.

The lodge is in a very quiet spot with no roads or towns nearby. You step off the plane and it is just water, forest, mountains and the sounds of nature. It instantly felt calm and removed from everyday life, and we both relaxed into it very quickly.

The lodge itself was simple, friendly and comfortable. Our room looked out over the inlet, and we often saw seals from the deck. Meals were eaten at shared tables, which made it easy to chat to other guests and swap stories about what everyone had seen that day. By the second evening it almost felt like a little community.

Days with the grizzlies

Our days at Knight Inlet were mainly focused on bear viewing with experienced local guides. They know the area and many of the individual bears very well, and it was clear that their priority was always the welfare of the animals, which really mattered to us.

In September, the salmon are running, so the grizzlies spend a lot of time along the rivers. We watched from viewing platforms and, at times, from small boats, always keeping a good distance and letting the bears get on with what they were doing.

Seeing a grizzly step out of the trees into the water, or a mother with her cubs, was incredibly special. There were quiet moments where everyone just watched and you could almost forget to take photos. The guides explained what we were seeing and shared a lot of background about the bears and their behaviour, which really added to it and made each sighting feel more meaningful.

It felt very natural and unhurried rather than like a “show”, and that slower pace suited us perfectly.

Beyond the bears: exploring the inlet

There is more to Knight Inlet than just the bears. Between viewing sessions, we spent time out on the water exploring the fjords and bays. We saw bald eagles, seals and porpoises, and on one of our trips we were lucky enough to see orcas in the inlet, which was a real bonus and completely unforgettable. It was one of those “did that really just happen?” moments.

The scenery is dramatic yet peaceful: steep forested slopes, waterfalls and narrow channels. Even when there was no major wildlife in sight, it was simply a lovely place to be, and we often found ourselves just sitting quietly and taking it all in.

We also did a couple of short walks in the temperate rainforest, learning a bit about the trees and plants that make up the ecosystem. It was a nice contrast to the time on the water and helped us understand more about the environment the bears depend on. It made the whole experience feel more joined up.

Back at the lodge in the evenings, things were very relaxed. We had hot drinks, watched the light change over the inlet and chatted with other guests. On clear nights, the stars were beautiful because there is so little light around, and standing out on the deck looking up became a lovely little routine.

A wildlife‑focused escape for two

As a couple, we found Knight Inlet worked really well. The days felt full, but we never felt rushed, and there was always time to just sit on the deck and take in where we were. It was active without being exhausting, which we really appreciated.

Overall, Knight Inlet gave us exactly what we were hoping for: close‑up wildlife in a very natural setting, simple comforts, and the feeling of being properly away from it all for a few days.

Thinking about your own Knight Inlet experience?

If you are planning a grizzly bear adventure in British Columbia and like the sound of wildlife, quiet places and simple, comfortable lodges, I would definitely consider including Knight Inlet. It also works well alongside time in Vancouver, on Vancouver Island or a journey through the Rockies.

Whether you are thinking of a wildlife‑rich escape for two, a special family trip or time away with friends, I can build Knight Inlet into a wider Canada itinerary that fits the way you like to travel. If this sounds like your kind of experience, I would be very happy to chat through ideas.
