When we decided to take our two children (both under 12) to Sri Lanka, we knew we wanted this to be more than a simple beach break. With nine nights to play with, our goal was to see as much of the country as possible. The wildlife, culture and stunning scenery were important for us to see.

Meeting our local guide in Sri Lanka
From the moment we arrived at the airport, we knew we had made the right decision. We were greeted by our local guide and driver, Chanaka, who was with us throughout our stay.
He arrived in a modern, spotlessly clean and very comfortable van which became our base for the next nine days as we travelled around the country. Before we left the UK, I had already agreed an outline itinerary with the team in Sri Lanka, but on our first day Chanaka took time to get to know us properly and understand what we were really hoping to experience.
Because he understood us so well, we made small tweaks as we went along. These gentle adjustments meant we were able to see even more than I had expected yet still avoided that “we need a holiday after the holiday” feeling.

Chanaka has been guiding in Sri Lanka for many years and his knowledge on the ground was incredible. There were very few questions he could not answer, from history and religion to wildlife and local life. For the children, this turned the whole trip into a living classroom, but in the most engaging and relaxed way.
We knew we would be moving between several hotels to explore different regions. Travelling with children, timing is crucial, and Chanaka judged this perfectly. He made sure we arrived at each hotel in good time, never too late and never with overly long days in the van, which made a huge difference to everyone’s energy levels.
Most of our stays were on a bed and breakfast basis. This gave us the chance to try different local restaurants in each place. Wherever we went, he had a shortlist of great recommendations up his sleeve, from relaxed family‑friendly spots to more special options when we wanted a treat.
Safaris, special moments and those little touches
One of the real highlights of our trip was changing two half‑day safaris into a full‑day experience. Because we had that local support, it was easy to make the adjustment and completely worth it. We were able to spend longer in Yala National Park and saw an incredible variety of animals and birdlife which the children are still talking about.
Our local partners also had access to excellent safari guides, which made a huge difference to our sightings and understanding of what we were seeing.
Another example of how valuable that insider knowledge is: at the elephant orphanage, Chanaka made sure we were in exactly the right place at the right time to see the elephants being fed. The children had an amazing, unobstructed view without us having to jostle for space. It was such a small tip, but it created one of their standout memories.
It was this constant stream of quiet, thoughtful recommendations that really elevated the whole experience.
How it felt as a family
Throughout the week we felt completely looked after and totally safe. We packed a lot into our nine nights and saw an enormous amount of the country, yet we never felt overwhelmed or that we were simply ticking off a list of sights.
Having a trusted local partner gave us the confidence to be a little more adventurous with our route, knowing that logistics, timings and safety were all being carefully managed in the background.

Based on our experience, I would always recommend using a local tour guide or specialist partner for the full duration of your time in a country like Sri Lanka, rather than just booking individual excursions here and there.
