Why you should include Lewa in your Kenyan safari
Conservation, Adventure and Luxury in Lewa Conservancy
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy: A Magical Safari for Families and Wildlife Lovers
Once a simple cattle ranch with a small rhino sanctuary, Lewa has grown into a 250-square-kilometre conservancy and one of Kenya’s most inspiring conservation success stories. Today, it offers some of the finest wildlife viewing in East Africa, combined with meaningful community impact and unforgettable experiences for all ages.
Exceptional Wildlife & Guiding
The wildlife diversity in Lewa is extraordinary. With Over 600 bird species, the big 5, jackal, ostrich and a huge variety of plains game as well as both Black and White rhino, this conservancy does not disappoint. You are rewarded with rich and varied sightings on every game drive.
During my stay at Elewana Kifaru House, guiding was a real highlight. Head guide Godfrey, a Maasai gentleman with a warm smile and an encyclopaedic knowledge of the bush, leads the team. I enjoyed game drives with both Godfrey and his colleague Philip, who were always ready to explain animal behaviour, identify even the trickiest birds and share local stories and anecdotes that bring the landscape to life.
Their passion for Lewa and its wildlife shines through every moment.
A True Multi‑Activity Safari Destination
Lewa is not just about game drives. It is a fantastic choice if you are seeking variety and adventure alongside world‑class wildlife. During a stay here you can enjoy:
- Horse riding across the open plains, surrounded by wildlife
- Camel safaris for a more traditional, gentle way to explore
- Canopy walks in the Ngare Ndare Forest, including the famous elevated walkway high above the forest floor
- Waterfalls and forest pools, perfect for a refreshing dip in a pristine natural setting
- Community visits to meet local people and gain a deeper understanding of life in this part of Kenya
- A visit to Lewa’s headquarters, where you can learn in depth about the conservancy’s pioneering conservation work and rhino protection
This mix of activities makes Lewa ideal for families and active travellers who like to be out and about, not just sitting in a vehicle.
A Perfect Safari for Families
Lewa Conservancy is a wonderful option for families who want:
- Exciting wildlife encounters in a safe, well-managed environment
- Quality time together in beautiful surroundings
- A choice of family‑friendly lodges and private houses
Many properties can arrange flexible schedules, child‑friendly guiding and engaging activities, so children can connect with nature in a fun and accessible way.
Conservation & Community
Lewa’s success is built on a powerful partnership between conservation and community. The conservancy runs extensive outreach through its Community Development Programme, supporting health care, education, micro finance initiatives and water projects.
By involving neighbouring communities and sharing the tangible benefits of wildlife, Lewa has created a model that protects endangered species while improving local livelihoods. As a guest, your stay directly supports this work.
My Top Tips for a Safari Stay in Lewa
- Choose
the right lodge atmosphere
Think about the style of stay you want. Would you prefer an intimate property with only a handful of rooms, or a slightly larger lodge with a livelier feel? The size and set‑up can make a big difference to your overall experience. - Do
not miss a day in the Ngare Ndare Forest
Set aside a full day for the Ngare Ndare Forest. Enjoy the waterfalls, swim in the forest pools and challenge yourself on the canopy walkway. It is a magical experience, though not ideal for anyone with a serious fear of heights. - Connect
with the people
Take time to talk to your guide, the lodge team and everyone you meet along the way. Kenyan hospitality is incredibly warm, and you will hear wonderful stories and insights that will stay with you long after you return home.
