Mauritius: A Grown‑Up Island Escape For A Special 60th Birthday

Kay Halton on 10 Sept 2025

Destination: Mauritius - all year round good temperatures, stunning island to discover.

When you dream of the perfect “big birthday” escape, Mauritius is exactly the sort of place that comes to mind: sugar-white beaches, blue skies, warm lagoon waters and service that makes you feel genuinely looked after.

For my husband’s 60th birthday, we chose Mauritius for a relaxed yet special island adventure, combining two beautiful Beachcomber resorts, scenic drives, local food, and a handful of unforgettable excursions. It was the ideal balance of indulgence and exploration, and a brilliant example of how I can tailor Mauritius for honeymooners, families, solos or empty nesters looking for a treat.

We started the celebration in style, flying with Emirates from Newcastle and connecting onwards to Mauritius. On the outbound journey we were upgraded to Business Class on the A380, which felt like a holiday in itself.  Spacious seating, excellent onboard service and a calm, refined atmosphere meant we arrived feeling rested and ready to enjoy the island, rather than recovering from the journey. If you are marking a special occasion, this kind of flight experience makes a big difference to how your first few days feel.

Our first five nights were spent at Beachcomber Victoria, in the adults only section known as Victoria for 2. It offered exactly what we wanted at the start: space to unwind, switch off and really feel the stress of everyday life melt away.   The adults only area is wonderfully peaceful, tucked away from the livelier main hotel, yet close enough that you can wander over and enjoy the entertainment and buzz whenever the mood takes you. It is the best of both worlds:

  • Quiet, grown‑up pool and loungers when you want calm.
  • Livelier atmosphere at the main hotel, including evening entertainment, when you fancy a bit of fun.

We stayed in an Ocean View Room in the adults only section, with the soothing sound of the sea just outside. Waking up to that view felt special every single morning.   We pre‑booked our evening restaurants for the duration of our stay, which I highly recommend for popular dates. At Victoria for 2 we dined at:

  • Morris Beef: A stylish steakhouse with a romantic, adults only atmosphere and beautiful views.
  • La Casa: A charming Italian restaurant, perfect for relaxed, leisurely dinners with comfort-food favourites.
  • L’Horizon: A beachside seafood venue that feels very “Mauritius”, with the sound of the waves and a focus on fresh, local catches.

The food across the resort was fabulous and consistently high quality, with attentive service that never felt intrusive.  The all-inclusive package certainly ticked the boxes!

One of the joys of Mauritius is how much is included at the better-quality resorts, and Beachcomber Victoria was no exception. We made full use of the complimentary watersports:

  • Glass bottom boat: A gentle way to see the marine life without getting wet, ideal if you prefer to stay on the surface.
  • Kayak & pedalo: Lovely for pottering around the lagoon together, taking in the scenery from the water.
  • Fishing from the beach: John found his happy place here, rod in hand, enjoying the simple pleasure of fishing with a tropical backdrop.

Although we enjoyed plenty of “do nothing” time, we also wanted to see more of Mauritius. We arranged a hire car through the hotel and booked a 5‑island tour with the on‑site excursion company, Mautourco.  This was a real highlight: a full day out exploring multiple islets by boat, surrounded by clear turquoise water and white sand. It is the sort of experience that gives you that classic “wow, we are really in the Indian Ocean” feeling.

With the hire car, we also drove up to Grand Baie, one of Mauritius’s liveliest coastal towns. It has a friendly, bustling atmosphere with shops, bars and cafés.  Ideal if you like to stroll, browse and watch local life go by, or pick up a few souvenirs.   Our next stop was Beachcomber Paradis, taking the scenic route south via Port Louis and its Marina Quay filled with shops and restaurants.  Along the way we stopped in Flic en Flac, a popular beach spot, and sampled some fantastic local street food. The curry was delicious and properly hot, a real taste of Mauritius that contrasted nicely with the refined hotel dining.  This self‑drive element is something I can easily build in for you if you feel confident on the road and want more independence. The island is very manageable by car (driving on the left is a bonus!) and there are plenty of viewpoints and little stops to enjoy along the way.

Our second base was Beachcomber Paradis, which sits on one of the most impressive stretches of coastline in Mauritius, framed by the dramatic backdrop of Le Morne. The setting alone makes it feel very special.   We checked into a Beachfront Room, just steps from the sand, which meant tranquil early morning walks and those golden sunsets right on our doorstep.  For adults wanting extra tranquillity, you also have the neighbouring Dinarobin, with its more intimate, village‑style feel.

Food is a real strength here, and we made the most of the dine‑around options:

  • Le Brabant (buffet): Our first night here, with a wide variety of dishes and a relaxed, sociable feel.
  • Zest: A fresh, modern dining option with stylish presentation and plenty of flavour.
  • Blue Marlin: A classic choice for seafood lovers, with a prime position by the water.
  • La Ravanne: A romantic, very Mauritian experience with authentic flavours and a gorgeous setting.
  • Dina’s at Dinarobin: An elegant, adults‑friendly restaurant at the sister hotel, perfect for a special evening.

Across both resorts, the food was consistently excellent, beautifully presented and varied enough to keep every evening interesting. Service was attentive, warm and genuinely caring, which makes all the difference on a milestone trip.    Once again, we took advantage of the included watersports. The sheltered lagoon at Paradis is ideal for gentle activities, whether you want to paddle, sail or simply cruise and admire the scenery. It is easy to do as much or as little as you like.

Inland Adventures: Chamarel & Grand Bassin:  Mauritius really shines when you head inland, and from Paradis we made two memorable day trips.

Chamarel: Seven Coloured Earth, Waterfall & Gorge:  Our drive to Chamarel took us through lush green hills and sugarcane fields, up into cooler, fresher air. Highlights included:

  • Seven Coloured Earth: An otherworldly landscape of layered, rippled sands in shades of red, purple and ochre.
  • Chamarel Waterfall: A spectacular cascade plunging into a deep pool below, framed by thick forest.
  • Viewpoints over the gorge: Sweeping panoramas of the island’s interior, with dramatic cliffs and dense greenery.

It is an excellent day for photography, gentle walking and appreciating a very different side of Mauritius from the coast.

Grand Bassin: a sacred lake and major Hindu pilgrimage site. It feels peaceful and reflective, with colourful temples, statues and offerings.  It is a beautiful reminder of the island’s rich cultural heritage, and a lovely contrast to days spent by the beach or pool.

Our 60th birthday trip was tailored as a grown‑up, relaxed escape, but one of the reasons I love Mauritius is how adaptable it is. With the right choice of hotel and location, it can be perfect for:

  • Honeymooners: Romantic rooms, adults only areas, candlelit dinners and special touches such as private beach dining or spa treatments.
  • Families: Spacious suites, kids clubs, safe lagoons for swimming, and plenty of activities to keep everyone happy.
  • Solo travellers: Friendly staff, secure and welcoming resorts, and a range of group excursions so you can be as sociable or independent as you like.
  • Empty nesters & couples: Peaceful, stylish resorts with quality dining, gentle activities and the option of luxury extras such as Business Class flights, private transfers and curated excursions.

The key is matching you with the right hotel, room type and location, then layering on the experiences that matter most to you: whether that is spa days, golf, watersports, cultural visits, food and wine, or simply time to rest in beautiful surroundings.  With year round sunshine it really is the ideal destination.
