Understanding Hotel Board Types: BB, HB, AI – What’s Actually Worth It?
When you’re booking a holiday, one of the most confusing parts can be the hotel board type. Bed & Breakfast, Half Board, All Inclusive… they all sound simple, but what they include (and whether they’re worth it) depends hugely on how you like to travel. As a Travel Counsellor, this is one of the questions I’m asked most often. So let’s break it down in plain English and help you decide which option actually gives you the best value for your holiday.
Bed & Breakfast (BB): Is Less Really More?
What it includes:
✔️
Your room
✔️
Breakfast each morning
Best for:
- Couples
- City breaks
- Families who love exploring
- Short stays
Bed & Breakfast works brilliantly if you plan to be out and about most days. You can enjoy a relaxed breakfast, then head off knowing you’re not tied to hotel meal times.
However, for families - especially with young children or additional needs - it’s worth considering how easy it will be to find lunch and dinner each day. Eating out every night can quickly add up and sometimes become stressful when routines, tiredness or sensory needs come into play.
My honest take:
Great for flexibility, but not always the most cost-effective or calm option
for families.
Half Board (HB): A Happy Middle Ground
What it includes:
✔️
Breakfast
✔️
Dinner (usually in the hotel restaurant)
Best for:
- Families who like structure
- Those who want stress-free evenings
- SEN-friendly travel
- Resort-based holidays
Half Board is often underestimated, but it can be the perfect balance. You’re free to explore during the day, enjoy lunch out if you wish, then return to the hotel knowing dinner is already sorted.
For families - particularly those with children who benefit from routine or familiar foods - having dinner planned can remove a huge amount of pressure at the end of the day.
My honest take:
One of the most underrated and often best-value board types for families.
All Inclusive (AI): Worth It or Overrated?
What it includes:
✔️
All meals
✔️
Snacks
✔️
Drinks (often including alcohol)
✔️
Entertainment and activities
Best for:
- Families with young children
- Those who want maximum convenience
- SEN families who value predictability
- Resorts with excellent facilities
All Inclusive can be fantastic - when chosen carefully. Not all AI resorts are the same. Some offer exceptional food variety, quiet zones and family-friendly spaces, while others can feel busy and overwhelming.
For many families, knowing that food and drinks are available when needed (especially outside standard meal times) can be incredibly reassuring.
My honest take:
Excellent value and low stress for the right family - but the resort choice is
crucial.
So… Which Board Type Is Actually Worth It?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The “best” option depends on:
- Your travel style
- The ages of your children
- Your budget
- Your need for routine or flexibility
- Dietary or sensory needs
- How much you want to explore outside the resort
This is where personal planning really matters.
How I Help You Choose the Right Option
When I help you plan your holiday, I don’t just ask where you want to go - I ask how you want to feel on holiday.
Do you want:
✔️
Predictable meal times?
✔️
Freedom to explore?
✔️
Minimal decision-making?
✔️
Quiet, low-sensory evenings?
By understanding your family’s needs, I can recommend the board type that offers genuine value - not just the lowest headline price.
